Who determines exactly how much we're supposed to give? We're already giving more than anyone by a large margin.

There's no definite answer to that. Giving 0.07 GDP regardless of the size of your economy is still small, even if say you're Canada (.14 GDP) with barely 1/10th of that. The US needs to resolve the issue of energy independence, the housing market collapse ect... But the fact remains the true value of this is reflected in the amount of your GDP you're willing to commit not in the simple fact that you're the leader, because giving the most when you're top dog is easy. What should guide you in this is your compassion and value of human life, your core values as a people, and I'm not willing to get into an argument about that.

I need to do a little more research before I make any point about this, but I wonder what the total cost of living is comparably (including taxes, health care, education, etc. etc.). This would be more accurate to determine how much money a person living in say...the Netherlands retains as opposed to what an average person in the US takes home.

That should be easy considering the big two are covered by taxes in most European countries and Canada. I would search for information on tax brackets and average (net) income within a specific country.
