That's exactly the problem. Sigh. You always do this. You always speak so matter of factly about America when you have no idea about the landscape.

Two young people, no matter what the race, trying to break into a house (in this country), are likely to be carrying firearms and would be even more likely to not hesitate to use them. I live in a sleepy college town and I know at least 2 different people whose houses have been robbed at gun point. It happens all the time, in just about all places in this country.

Money said it best. It's either, "take all my stuff," or "boom you're dead." One has to make the choice of being at the mercy of someone who is obviously threatening, or attempting to prevent them from doing so.

I think the man had a right to protect himself in terms of self-defense if he thought his own life was in danger. I believe he put himself in a situation where the only result would be death or massive injuries on both sides (possibly including police officers also, he deserves a boot to the face for that alone), which the police advised against and is completely his fault. He was clearly looking for someone or something to shoot at... "wanna bet on it?". And of course a jury would never press charges against him... it's fucking Texas.

Texas isn't all that bad. I do see how other places are worse for crime, though. I live about 8 minutes outside of downtown Dallas and I can count the number of times I've been held at gunpoint on one hand. Granted, I bet maybe 2 other people in TW have had a gun pulled on them, but that still doesn't mean Texas is the problem. Large cities attract more criminals. More criminals attract more illegal weapon traffickers. It all adds up. Just don't live in a big city anywhere, that's the solution. But then again, you hear about the real whackjobs out there who go to small out of nowhere places and do horrific things to the residents. I'd much rather be shot than have all my limbs cut off and be raped by shaved koala bears.
