  • What are your 10 all-time favorite console RPGs of all time?

Any system, from any time in the history of video games.

    10) Super Mario RPG (SNES)

This game was so fun at the time, but is probably not a game I would go back to play today. Smithy and Culex were really cool and original bosses from the game, while characters like Geno and Mallow were never seen again in future Mario "RPG-ish" installments (paper mario).

    9) Etrian Odyssey (NDS)

Awesome classic dungeon crawling RPG where party customization is at its maximum, you can have a team consisting of only medics or a well-balanced one with a fighter, archer, and mage. Maps are not given to you, but are recorded by yourself using the stylus as you venture level by level deeper and deeper into the maze.

    8) Secret of Mana (SNES)

Good graphics, great sound, and it had an good story line. Multiplayer for a console RPG was unheard of...until this game was released on the SNES. Unfortunately, companies have not capitalized on this idea much. I was never ever bored while playing this one, and the storyline was convincing enough that I wanted to unfold more of it as the plot thickened.

    7) Lost Odyssey (XBox360)

Probably the best New-Gen RPGs, the gameplay doesn't get too repetitive and it introduces precision button tapping during fights that keeps the player engaged, the option for japanese voice with subtitles is always a nice touch, and the music...is superb. I still have the soundtrack on my ipod that I listen to all the time.

    6) Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2)

This game was challenging enough to keep you hooked onto its SMT style gameplay, with great battle music to keep your battles entertaining and interesting.

    5) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (PS2)

Innovative gameplay, but it did get repetitive nearing the end of the game. Its fun to date girls, study at school, while fighting monsters at night. Very immersive gameplay. The music was okay, but it isn't for everybody.

    4) Lufia II - Rise Against the Sinistrals (SNES)

Puzzles were crazy challenging, graphics were smooth as hell, and had a great soundtrack to boot.

    3) Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

There is no doubting how great this game was and still is to this day...my fondest memories lie in trying to take on the weapons without KotR, my friends and I would make up materia combinations and it was fun getting into all that. Chocobo races were really addicting, but breeding was needlessly tedious. Some characters are more memorable than others, but there is no denying the awesome soundtrack to this great game. There are too many memorable soundtracks, each one better than the last.

    2) Chrono Trigger (SNES)

Alternate endings, memorable bosses and characters, AWESOME soundtrack and had a huge replayability factor. I can easily pick this up and start playing it again whenever I have free time. Double and Triple techs? Finishing the game multiple times in order to get all the best rainbow gear? Collecting all the black treasure boxes and beating Mu at ** level...this game is so good I can't think of anything that would tax it of Chrono Trigger's greatness.

    1) Tales of Phantasia (Super Famicom/SNES)

My first experience with this game was that I had to play the Japanese version without having a damn clue about Japanese. I had to honestly trial-and-error my way through, but that didn't stop me. At the time, the battle system is incredibly unique to the typical turn-based system, and it really set a precedent for following Tales games in the series. The graphics are even better than Chrono Trigger, while the story line was just simply top notch (I love games that give you a clear goal about who the main boss of the game is, kinda gives you more incentive rather than leaving you in the dark). The fighting system is this game is its main draw, so if you love games like Tales of the Abyss, you NEED to play this game either on ROM or find the GBA port. This game isn't easy, and you will find that even though the fighting system may seem like button-mashing at first, strategic placement of spells by your teammates can be used to your advantage when used in-conjunction with your own techniques to create greater effects, kinda like double and triple techs for Chrono Trigger.

Star Ocean: Til the end of time (PS2)
really liked the story line of this game, plus the battle system was pretty cool and the graphic was nice

    Final Fantasy IV (NDS)
Benn playing this on my NDS right now the remade version of it, the story line was amazing, who would forget the great Cecil!

    Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
My first final fantasy game, I liked how once u got all the weapons u can rape everyone, plus bleeding chocobo and use them in race was fun

    Final Fantasy X (PS2)
This game was challenging until your got all the legendary weapons and unlock the full power of them from collecting specific items for them, altho collecting them was pain in the ass, like chocobo race with 0.00 for time to get Tidus' item.. and dodge fuken 100 lightning in a row to get Kamrai's

You can never forget how fun blitzball was, i remember spending countless hours leveling up my guys and signing the beat players to play for my team! Tidus with Jecht Shot 2 and Brother in the front is unstoppable.. get Nimrook as your goalie and u are set

    Grandias III(PS2)
I didnt have much hope in this game when i started, but once u play along, it's a pretty good game with a decent story line, the special attacks in this game was quite amazing

    Pokemon!! (GB, GBA, NDS)
Come on every kid in the 90s must have played this game! BLUE RED YELLOW GREEN EMERALD, etc

          10. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)

Squaresoft was widely known at this point for their epic RPGs, especially Final Fantasy 3/6 (US/JP). When news broke that Nintendo was teaming up with Square to craft an RPG with Mario there was a lot of doubt to how it would either be too RPG Lite or too homogenized for the younger crowd for it to not FEEL like a Squaresoft title. Thankfully, people were dead wrong. While the gameplay was more simplistic on the surface, those still waters ran deep with side quests, like the Culex Optional Boss Battle mentioned by Kim. I didn't care for Mallow, but I'm waiting for the return of Geno, damnit!

Side note: To my recollection, it's the first Mario game where Bowser and Mario team up to take on a 'greater evil'.

          09. Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

This is the NeXt Box's first epic RPG that does the genre justice. You can see the gameplay similarities to Final Fantasy are prevalent, but the storytelling is all its own in this entry. You play as Kaim who is an immortal, living 1000 years and doesn't remember much of it. As you play along you're recollect his lost memories and piece together his past. The stories are well written and provide a great backstory to this emotionally deep character. The best part is this is 100% optional to the player to read, if they wish to opt out of all the reading. Even if they do, they can always come back to it later.

          08. Vagrant Story (PS1)

Another one of many Square RPGs, but this one doesn't have "Final Fantasy" in the title. No, it's a unique IP that I wish we would see again. Vagrant Story wasn't really full of story, but rather combat. It was strategic and slower paced with you choosing where to attack your opponent, a la Fallout, to gain a tactical advantage in the fight. While we won't ever see another Vagrant Story in our future, bits and pieces of it exist in the current world of Final Fantasy 12's Ivalice (and the Ivalice Alliance Series).

          07. Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (PSP)

An action RPG by Square Enix that more than made up for the dismal "Dirge of Cerberus". The storyline followed FF7 Legend Zack Fair as he rose from the ranks of Shinra's SOLDIER program to become the legend he was in the PS1 epic. A lot of old, a lot of new, some that's borrowed, and the ending is blue. We knew coming into it, it wasn't going to be pretty, but hey ... it was worth it.

          06. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

I wonder how many Nintendo Execs got the axe for letting this slip through their fingers. The game that defined the Playstation and brought RPGs into the mainstream, Final Fantasy 7 is the primogenitor to many other RPGs you see today. Love it or hate it, you must respect the market share it dug out for itself and the snowball effect it had on the industry. If you aren't sure what this game is or about, then you're not the type of person to be reading this in the first place.

          05. Star Ocean 2: The Second Story (PS1)

Enix, before they merged with Squaresoft, did battle with Final Fantasy with their own series "Star Ocean". It never made quite as many sequels as FF (Star Ocean 4 is announced for the Xbox 360 last E3), but it has a strong cult following. You play the role of Claude Kenni, Ensign of the Earth Federation, you are marooned on an undeveloped planet (circa 1600's Earth) and have to find your way home. You get involved with being this 'chosen one' that a prophecy told and you make your way to a quest ultimately saving the universe. Also, you get to play a take on Iron Chef, that's right ... Iron Fucking Chef.

          04. Final Fantasy 3/6 [US/JP] (SNES)

Squaresoft will obviously dominate this lineup, but this game is very deserving of a top spot on the list. This entry into the Final Fantasy universe brought in a more mature story line with a wide cast of diverse characters who were not only uniquely interesting, but people you actually gave a crap about. Also, you meet one of the great antagonists of RPGs "Lord Kefka". Never before on the SNES have you meet someone as diabolical and coldly-calculated as Kefka. And not until Sephiroth in Final Fantasy 7, have we been so drawn to an RPG Villain.

          03. Lunar: Silver Star Story (Sega CD/Sega Saturn/PS1)

Anime Cutscenes? Check. Boy wonder who wants to be a hero? Check. Dragons, Magic, Swords? Check. Check. and Check. This game is riddled with cliches like this and the story is a bit so-so at first, until you dive into the main quest proper. You're a young boy looking to become a Dragonmaster, wielding the power of the dragon spirits to protect the Earth. What made this stand out was the voice acting, beautifully drawn cutscenes, and engaging battles full of strategy and depth reminiscent of Chrono Trigger

          02. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Series (Nintendo DS)

What is an RPG? A role playing game, and in this role playing game, you assume the role of Rookie Defense Attorney Phoenix Wright. It's a text based adventure full of plot twists and turns over what feels like a Season of courtroom drama for a TV show you've never seen before. Likable characters, intelligent gameplay, and an epic overarching story that ties all 3 games together make this a must buy for anyone looking to get into an RPG without the grind. Also, I'm TW's Miles Edgeworth and I'm biased.

          01. Chrono Trigger (SNES)

An RPG never had so much replay value and bad ass Frog Princes until this game. A major draw was the fighting system that strayed from the random battles on a 'field' separate and apart from the map screen, but actually occurred where you met your opponents. Also, character placement was a big part of the strategy that played out, being able to do dual/tri team attacks on your foes.

The following could easily make this list or many other lists like this, but they just couldn't. Honorable Mentions:

          Golden Sun (GBA)
          Original Pokemon Red/Blue (GB)
          Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1)
          Final Fantasy 12 (PS2)
Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time (PS2)
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (Sega CD)
          Grandia: Xtreme (PS2)
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (Xbox 360/PS3)

i'm amazed that so many people leave FFX off the list but have other final fantasies in their list. I guess everyone's entitled to their own opinions.

can't really think of 10 right now, i'll try 5.

                          5. One of the pokemon games. Sure, laugh at it, but like it or not, they are solid rpgs.

                          4. Final fantasy VIII. Yes junctioning was retarded, but the story was great and the leveled enemies were a good change.

                          3. Goldensun 1/Goldensun 2. I consider these the same game, only in 2 parts. Very underrated. Decent story and great battle mechanics. Class setup with djinns are very deep.

                          2. Elder scrolls:Oblivion. I guess i'll count it as an rpg, considering you do go around and level up. Just overall a very good game.

                          1. Final Fantasy X(Not X-2, just X). In my opinion one of the best games. Amazing storyline, amazing graphics(remember released in 2001), amazing game mechanics, and the spheregrid made you feel like you actually did someone when you level up. Very long too. Main quest took about 50 hours, with sidequests going up into the 200-300 hours.

p.s i've started FFVII 4 separate times, and all 4 times i quit within 3 hours....is it just me? is it really worth playing nowadays?

I don't know what all of these you would classify as RPG's but:

Fable (I don't remember what system, but the game was really good)

                              Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

Starcraft: for the computer and the N64. For the N64 if you bought the expansion pack you could play two players.
