Ok, so here's my deal. I have been accepted into a student internship with the US Department Of State, and I thought I would include my favorite group of internet rejects to assist me in making an informed decision on the matter. I only have to do 3 1/2 more years to receive my graduate (masters) degree in Foreign Policy, and I've been given the option to choose between several US Embassies and Consulates located worldwide, but local language proficiency is going to be required regardless of where I go.

Basically what I'd like to achieve out of this thread would be...based on individual experiences, which languages would be worth learning, and what would be some of the best places in the world to experience? As of right now, based on my current knowledge of languages and the current vacancies being offered to me, I can only choose between Perth, Australia, Abu Dhabi UAE, and Kabul Afghanistan. With countries like Austria, Rwanda, Canada (french), and the Red Republic (and a couple others) I'd feel like I sold myself short if I didn't at least research other peoples experiences in any of those locales.

Any constructive opinions are welcome, and I apologize if I was not very thorough, I'm not all there right now.

I wouldn't consider myself proficient by any means, but I'm still quite familiar with the arabic language...Conversational, I guess, which is why I believe I would qualify for the above listed arabic regions already. My personal experiences in the middle east alone does not automatically disqualify that region, but I honestly would prefer elsewhere in the world. Muslim/Islam is not a religion/lifestyle I respect and would prefer not to be exposed to it again. So lets hear something to contradict my opinion!!

I have met a girl from Turkey who managed to learn such a level of German in a single year that she can get trough university. I have no idea how she managed to pull that off. She already has a doctorate in physics so she must be clever.

My uncle is living in Abu Dhabi right now, has done for many years. It's a nice looking and small place. Not sure what exactly it is you don't respect about Islam (That's the religion, Muslims follow Islam) though, it's a religion that is actually pretty peaceful, it's just the extremists that take it too far. You're gonna get exposed to Islam if you go to Abu Dhabi or Kabul...

If you're already speaking Arabic, well kinda, you're going to find it easier to head to those arabic speaking areas, simple as that really. It's pretty good to be aware of it, so if I had to pick, I'd pick Abu Dhabi.

My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.
