Though this might be a bit unrelated to the point of the thread, as I don't really have anything to add to what has been said (though Squeezer, keep in mind that Eric likes to cling to the pessimistic side of a story). Ultimately its the kid fault and only he is to blame for being this selfish. It should not surprise anyone that people on the internet would encourage him. But then again, it is not like it doesnt happen in real life. Everyone who has been at school and noticed 2 kids get into a fight have seen a group of people going: Fight, Fight, Fight and another group (mostly a lot smaller) trying to stop the fight.

The unrelated part: 1. Those forums are really fucked up, is it even about bodybuilding? 2. Wtf is that website (the one with the video)? I saw some of the pictures of other videos, who the fuck wants to see an accident with some kid lying in a pool of his own blood? (at least, that is what the description said, the pics make me sick enough, I aint watching anything on that site).
Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.

      To what squeezer said:

I doubt they can be criminally charged. But imagine what the people who saw the vid must be thinking. "If i had only called the police when i saw he wasn't moving after the 4th hour." One guy on those forums was convinced that it was a still, even though you can see the sunlight dimming and the shadows moving.

And there was another guy who was convinced that the paramedics were his friends, and that the cops were fake, he was faking etc. Other people were just straight up laughing, getting excited that the cops were coming.

Amazing how desensitized alot of these people are. My own 9-year old neighbor was describing how he was going to take his grandpa's handgun and blow some brains up. 9 years old. Amazing, his parents smile and say "what are we gonna do with him??? ".

unrelated: The 2nd part, I agree 100%. They have random pictures thrown up there of a man's head. Blood and esophagus diaphragm, pharynx whole nine yards were just layin there. I don't understand why somebody would go to that website. EVER.

I would argue I see the world for what it is, but even if my opinions are biased it doesn't negate or even diminish the possibility of them being true. I certainly wouldn't want to convert people to my side, knowing that the grass isn't very green over here

i havent read this thread ><

but my view is that this shouldn't be surprising or indeed spark such controversy.

Suicide is quite comon and attempted suicide for attention or a cry for help even more so, the internet provides a means to make a statement and thats often the sort of thing that goes through these people's minds i guess.

Some people are messed up and don't seek the help they need so there is always going to be people making statements or such acts of stupidity as they lash out at themselves and society but ultimately it should be about trying to encourage people who do these things to go seek help first.

rather than the father call for better regulation they should try and use this case to highlight the needlessness of suicide and that it is a public problem and it shouldn't be shamefull to go seek mental help.

                this is quite sad

i don't know, but i'm guessing he wanted someone to stop him

it's not like slitting your wrists, after you swallow all those pills, either you puke or die. You don't get the immediate "oh shit that hurts, i might die" feeling, it's too late by the time you start to feel it.

having had a few friends who've either seriously tried to kill themselves or succeded, I am completely sure that all, if not most of the people who watched that video live will have to live with this their entire lives.

The hardest part is always wondering if they were hoping that you specifically would help them, and you looked the other way.

If you ever hear anyone you know joking about something like this, please let them know how it would make you feel if they went through with it. I certainly wish I could've warned some people in my past.

America as a country faces quite the quandry over this issue. In the modern age of sueing and extreme interpretation of the Constitution, we have lost something collectively as a society. If someone begins talking about morality, most people will immediately jump to religion without listening (because that is the most common place to find a moral base) and with the modern quantify everything worldview will say "get that mysticism/mythological shit outta my face". When we transformed from a country with a Christian basis and Christian morals that stresses that suicide is WRONG, we lost something. In modern day if you even speak the Christian view on suicide in a public school, you are liable to end up in deep shit because some parent will feel you are "forcing your religion on their kid and that is absolute horse piss". Essentially we traded away our collective morality and a society that stressed against suicide for individual morality (which some people don't have, and is often hard to discern at a young age). The problem with individual morality is it is sometimes founded in absolute retardation. Lets face the facts: most kids go to public schools -> law suites have forced the public schools to give absolutely objective views and stop teaching any real morality -> children are reliant on their parents and religious affiliations (most kids don't even pay attention @ church during their youth) for their morality -> some parents plain suck and some kids don't mature fast and need an extra helping hand to get grounded. So your choice is to tell people what to believe (suicide is wrong or honorable if you're Roman), which in my opinion is wrong, or not to educate them about the morality of suicide on a mass scale at all and have young people who are the most prone to suicide have a weak standing on an important issue.

                    so schools should teach morality?

I don't know about that. The law is the closest a school should come to teaching morality.

well most people don't do the whole religion thing anymore, a lot of parents suck and don't teach their kids morality, and my opinion is that most people don't think for themselves anymore at a young age, they let the media think for them and regurgitate what they took in as their opinion, it just so happens that young people are the most vulnerable to suicide in America these days. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Religion isn't the only way to morality you know. My parents nor school ever did the religion thing. I have good morals, and I have gone through more than enough shit early in my life, forcing me to grow up quickly. It is not like my life has been a walk in the park up till now.

It doesn't matter that there are secular modes of teaching morality, you're still teaching a version of morality to someone against their will.

Goes both ways. You don't want Christian/Jewish/Satanistic views placed on you and they don't want secular morality put on them. Abortion is a place I could easily see lawsuits coming up in schools.

As I said, the law is secular and that's about as far as I'd let anyone institute a "morality" system within our schools. Whatever morality means anyway.

Anyone using the term "Christian morals" better be ready for the ice to break underneath them. Without the fear of retribution from some higher power we might never have stopped beating each other to death long enough to create societies. At the same time, religion is probably the 3rd largest killer in the history of humanity behind old age and disease.

Who is anyone to say suicide is wrong? Is suicide more wrong than living a tortured life as an 85 year old cancer patient? What about an 18 year old who suffers severe depression because he has no friends, no prospects etc? Obviously we know that the 18 year old has many years in front of him to turn his life around and things will likely get better, but try convincing him of that. Try convincing him that his pain and misery is not as bad as he thinks and see where it gets you.

The only point I'd like to make is that morality is subjective. I can't stand that so many people think the world or anything in it is black and white. The only rule I'd like to see people live by is this: spend your life trying to figure out how to make yourself happy without hurting others.

You can't help to solve a problem without understanding it and you can't understand it without asking questions. Everyone wants to provide answers and no one wants to ask questions... to learn. I don't have any answers or many suggestions, mostly criticisms. One thing I do know, religion is the answer to only one question: what is the best and worst thing humanity has ever invented?
