when i was like 17 -18 me and my friends went through a phase of getting drunk and playing risk

it was a great laugh but does take ages to set up etc but that didn't seem like a big deal when you are drinking and talking shit anyway.

Settlers of Catan is brilliant. It's simple enough to be thought to people that doesn't play much games even when they are drinking! That game really kicks ass after a joint or three.

maybe it's just me, but I've never considered chess a board game.

I understand its a game...that's played on a board nonetheless, but there's far more to chess that just rolling a die and getting lucky.

I'm not berating anybody, I've just never considered it a board game per se.

we used to get 4 people drinking and smokin and make our cig/bowl breaks "diplomacy time". we had allies within allies lol, it really made the strategy even more intense. great game if you can find a couple fairly smart people to play with.
