I've been meaning to make this thread for awhile. Known anyone who's gotten it? Thinking about it? Holding off to see the long term effects of it?

Laser Eye Surgery

Wicked Baser had it done a few years ago. He had really bad eyesight, now it is better than 20/20. The main problem he has had with it is his eyes can get really dry and need lots of eye drops. They said this would be common after the surgery, but it's been about 3 yrs now. He is looking into fixing that problem now. The actual surgery was no big deal.

I'm slightly long-sighted. I inquired about it but the Optometrist said to wait for a couple of reasons.
1) my eyes are not bad enough.. apparently they burn a layer of "growth" off the retina, if there isnt much to burn there is a risk of burning the retina itself.
2) the technology is still fairly new and is improving all the time.. this was a couple of years ago so maybe its improved?sigpic

My sister had laser surgery done around a year and a half ago. No problems whatsoever. It's getting less expensive every day...!Originally Posted by HeavenSent

I know a few people who've gotten it and they're very pleased with the results, although it can be very expensive (up to $5000/eye, don't believe the ads those are just starter prices!). It's only good if your eyes are completely stable, meaning your prescription does not change ever. The procedure has been around for 15 years now and is widely used. Still up to 5% of people who get it will get some side effects, and up to 1% can have major side effects.
Something else to note. I remember during one of my lectures in med school, one of the ophthalmologists lecturing that day was the president of the Canadian Ophthamological Society (a prof at our school) and someone asked about laser eye surgery. He said that overall it's a very safe and proven procedure, but then he added 'but if you note, I still have my glasses on'. Although his job depended on his vision not being in any way compromised by a botched surgery.Epinephrine's History of Trench Wars:

My friend got it done like two years ago and seems happy about it still and didn't have any side effects.
Glasses don't bother me and I'm paranoid enough about any "unnecessary" surgeries that I'm not gonna do it. Also my eyesight has not even settled yet it seems. Only gone to about halfway of the numbers my dad has in his glasses so far <_<TWL-J champ season 5 (Elusive)

this girl that works with me had it done. She had terrible eyesight too (like -.900 or something) but now has 20/20. She said she got it done because her glasses/contacts were getting too expensive.
Another friend of mine had it done and he was really nearsighted too... took a week before he recovered... I guess it's good for people who have really bad eyesight...TelCat> i am a slut not a hoe

My aunt had it done about 10 years ago (in America), and her eyesight has been steady ever since. I've been looking into doing it myself, and I've found it not to be that expensive. The cheapest one is around € 1500 for both eyes but they provide crappy quality, but for around € 3000 (both eyes!) you can get a high quality treatment in a well-known clinic, so the price is not that bad imo. The biggest disadvantage which is still holding me back is that once you've undergone the treatment, it's permanent; you can't get a second treatment once your eyesight worsens again.

friend of mine had this done roughly 2 years ago, he's still using eyedrops daily.. not as much as a year ago but still waaaay too much for me to even consider doing a laser eye surgery, i already have extremely dry eyes right now... so for now i'm just sticking to my glasses/contacts combination.

someone i know got this done and they were super sensitive to light and semi-blind for the rest of the day, so naturally i started poking her a lot and throwing stuff at her.
she managed to find a knife and chased me around the house

I guess I'm on the fence. I want to wait longer to make sure my prescription doesn't change and possibly wait until they improve the surgery. I'd hate to have it done then a year later they completly revolutionize the surgery.
Epi: I have seen ads for $250, that was going to be my next question. Is lasik a joke? How much does it cost to get it done properly?it makes me sick when i think of it, all my heroes could not live with it so i hope you rest in peace cause with us you never did

I have always wanted to get my tier 2 (or beyond) pilots license since I was a kid, but never had the opportunity since I have never had 20/20 natural vision. I have so much going on between different things that I haven't considered it just yet (contacts are convenient enough for me), but when I retire I'll definitely look into it as I'd love to have a third income as a retiree with private flying lessons. Hopefully by then some of the long term effects of laser surgery will be hashed out, and newer technology will come about to ensure an even safer and effective surgery.
I don't know anyone that's had it done personally.

Yeah forgot to mention they made Wicked Baser wait about a year to make sure that his eyes werent still developing/changing prescription. He had a choice between 2 different kinds of eye surgery but I cant remember which one he had done.
A very close family friend had the surgery done about 13 years ago, he's in his 50s now, never been happier to still have perfect eyesight.

Would you really want to pay 250 dollars for your eye surgery or would you rather save up money and pay 5000 dollars for it? I mean your putting your eye sight on the line here. Oh and I suggest when you get it done you come to America since Doctors in Canada don't have any reason to really try with Universal Health care and the socialist aspect of life up there.Rabble Rabble Rabble
