if you're in a walmart being sieged by zombies....your option for mobility is far less than if you are chillin in an open field, see some zombies coming and decide to bail, because there are no walls. the option of mobility aka escape routes are always important. i am sorry if i don't believe in creating a fortress and being put under siege, you will lose a war of attrition that way. i will take my field and chill for a while, then move to another open area, and keep on moving as soon as threats present themselves

I think being holed up in a walmart for a siege would be a much easier lifestyle than being a nomad and constantly being out in the open, eventually your nerves would crack from having to be vigilant 100% of the time, and always worried about zombies somewhere while you are rolling around. At least for a while inside of a walmart that has been completely sealed off you have a chance to get some decent sleep and not have to worry about the zombies at least for little while.

You need to be mobile from the get go, not chill in a field somewhere and let the zombies decide your options for you

your food source runs out, how do you get more? oh you don't because you are under siege by zombies. you have a greater chance to live if you are nomadic because you can get supplies from multiple sources, excursions seem nigh impossible in your fortress. i will take my chance in a field and on the move

where are you on the move at? i picked in particular that i would try to stay in areas with high visibility (i.e. a field) where you moving @? downtown where the population is high?

edit- I'm not staying in any one place for long, especially open areas that are not easy to defend like an open field

Cities are death traps, I wouldn't want to spend more than a day in any one place, I'd probably bounce from suburbia to suburbia, city every now and then. I'd stay away from open areas like fields because I'd be worried about the zombies catching my scent on the wind and hunting me down when I'm asleep and the lack of obstacles in their way as they try to get to me

where ever i chill for the night, I'm going to make sure I have choke points and an emergency exit

If your idea is to stay outdoors because it's mobile, then an open field is the worst kind of terrain to choose. Again, a hill would be better because you can see farther around you and it's easier to defend. A wooded area would be good too because zombies don't move very well and the irregular terrain would work in your favour. But waiting in the middle of nowhere until you're forced to find another wide open space?

And do you really think you'd last more than a single night without any shelter at all? Your idea of taking shifts to keep watch won't work if the people getting rest have no shelter to do so. It wouldn't even be a matter of attrition, but of stamina, and without any supplies or shelter, you're toast.

I am staying with LB, until the Nomad thing becomes to hot to handle, then we will double-back to my house, where unbeknown to anyone I have spend years digging an elaborate underground tunnel system with a few entrances/exits which you can only find if you know about them. And I am the only one that knows about them.

They are so well hidden, you can't even trip over them or find them by accident. My elaborate tunnel system is full with chambers with non perishable food and tons of bottled water I have collected over the years. I have also managed to secure a natural spring, so water is no issue. In the 1% chance zombies actually do find an entrance, I have strategically placed charges that an seal of certain parts of the tunnel system, while still leaving uncovered escape routes open. Here me and LB will spend as much time as needed by the candled light of the thousands of candles I have saved up.

But, as with any zombie scenario. There will come a point that by sheer unluckiness, LB will find himself infected with the zombie virus and begs me to kill him before it is too late. I will cry and scream: WHY, WHY, WHY?! And then take a shovel and cut his head off.

Or, if we are lucky, the zombies will defeated before that happens.

Again, eventually if you became a nomad the strain of having to be so careful for such a long period of time would eventually get to you and would make you insane. Imagine trying to find food, having to raid gas stations and stores, never knowing what was inside the store when you went in. A siege type of scenario would probably be the best played, especially if you can survive for lets say at the minimal a year inside a wal-mart before people get cabin fever or something happens and people start trying to escape out of pure terror about running out of supplies. But you would have to assume that somewhere out there that there is a militant faction or a base of the army that would be winning the fight and that they would be looking for survivors eventually. They would never find you in a field, they are going to search rooftops of large buildings, and having a huge sign on top of a walmart saying HUMANS INSIDE NOT INFECTED would definitely seem better than the alternatives.

I will have to disagree, no matter what, nomad, open field, or inside a fortress is going to be stressful, and will eventually make people crack, but with the first two you can never get a full night of sleep without worrying, at least inside the walmart you are nearly 100% sure that no zombies will be getting through if you use the barricading method I proposed of moving the thousands of aisles against the doors, all of the shopping cards, boarded up everything including the windows etc. Also the idea of the hope that someone might come to save us would work wonders for peoples morale. That and the huge supplies of food and or water.
