so i looked it up when i got home from work

I was in Mombasa while the events happened, and actually saw the American Ship arriving in the port (well, i saw it passing through the channel...)

Pirates in and around the Gulf of Aden is very common actually. Anti-piracy operations are regular there. From where I was staying in Likoni, which is right on the coast of Kenya, I regularly saw UN German battleships going in and out. You'd see them go out in the morning, then when they returned the same day or after a day or two, you'd know that meant they'd caught some pirates...
