My only problem with Wal-Mart is more of a philosophical problem in that now as a society we're buying all these crappy goods (wal-mart goods are generally crappy aside from the stuff like shampoo) which easily break at a low price as people are too short-sighted or living from paycheque to paycheque to actually buy something slightly more but much higher quality that would last longer. All this ends up doing is creating more factories->more pollution->more garbage and isn't healthy for our planet.
I am a frequent user of their optical center, and it seems mediocre at best. I still use it because I buy contacts that are forty percent cheaper than going to a real optician. I'm with you on the fact that if you buy anything worth more than $100 at Wal-Mart, you're a fucking idiot. It's going to break, and usually a lot sooner than if you bought it somewhere else. Food is relatively cheap there though, especially non-perishable items. The service sucks, and the company survives by cutting corners at all ends to provide the lowest prices to the consumer. I am a consumer so naturally I like the low prices but its usually at the expense of their workers.

        • My morals don't extend to the world of retail. If that were the case I probably wouldn't buy anything.

          • and why not? is it okay to abuse human rights to generate cheaper goods? (brief aside)the fact that you and many others are willing to forego their morals in situations such as these is exactly the reason why Jerome's idea of rise up and revolt will never happen.(/brief aside) you make a compromise of your morals, and guess what? that compromise benefits you. you see lower prices. you compromise at the cost of workers who get screwed over by shit business practices and little chinese kids who toil and suffer. Out of all of its employees (foreign and domestic), walmart only provides 1/4th with sufficient wages to be considered above the poverty line. you are not morally opposed to that? oh wait you simply turn a blind eye so you can get crocs for $2.50 a dozen. what you are doing is considered mortal sin in christianity (i am not a christian, but most people here are, maybe you are?). you acknowledge that the path you are taking is bad and still take the path.

"the capitalist can do no wrong" right? he (the corporation, since it is legally considered a person) doesn't directly screw them, just indirectly. retail is indeed a field of business that is essentially built on screwing someone over, which makes it dificult to find anyone with fair business practices to buy from. its this lack of moral inclusion in the sphere of retail that got us to this point.

                  anyways, back to health care.

                    • Since the crimes perpretated by governments are ignored because hey, they do some good things too, I will apply the same logic to private individuals and say hey, wal-mart has lifted 1.4 million people out of poverty, reduced the cost of basic necessities, and benefits society via charity and humanitarian aid.

                      • I just skimmed over mattey's post, and I realize two things. 1) you should really, really examine the relationship between insurance companies and government. without regulation, prices would not have risen, because companies would actually have to compete. As it stands, these companies retain geographic monopolies on entire states, and they are prevented from making the most basic of economic calculations. this is quite literally "unchecked" regulation - noone ever looks through the hundreds of laws that came before when deciding what to do next, and so the problems keep heaping on. You're trading laissez faire economics for laissez faire regulation - politicians are doing whatever they want.

                        2) obviously the system is broken, has been broken, and will continue to be broken. No amount of de-regulation can solve that unless it is complete. It seems to me, and I may be wrong here, but it seems that most people view the market as some force that can always somehow overcome interventions, or adapt to work with the law. While individuals are excellent at finding ways to get around problems, and thus the market always finds a way to compensate for forced interventions, this is not an inherent truism. At some point, the cobbled together regulations will seize a market's engine up. I view the current crisis in healthcare as the culmination of problems created by past laws.

At the very least, you cannot call it a "market failure". It is a "government failure". There is no inherent flaw in economics that would create this sort of price, supply and demand imbalance.

                        • Btw, why do so many companies deal with insurance companies? Why don't businesses just simply contract with a doctor or hospital?

                          • hey cops, as it turns out, private charity was actually so plentiful that doctors started losing money!

The AMA, in its constant quest for higher incomes through lower competition, also battled churches and other charities that gave free medical care to the poor. Through lobbying, it attempted to stamp out what it called "indiscriminate medical charity." A model 1899 law in New York put the control of all free health care under a State Board of Charities dominated by the AMA. To diminish the amount of free care, the board imposed fines and even jail terms on anyone giving treatment without first getting the patient's address and checking on his financial status.
apparently these guys spent the first half of the century driving up the cost of healthcare, and the second half of the century lobbying to force the taxpayer to then pay for these costs.

i can't even trash talk the AMA, the ruthlessness makes my cruel capitalist heart warm.
