I got a s80 from 2000. Only problem I ever had was something with the air conditioning being broken. For the rest, not one problem, and it still drives smoothly without weird noises or anything.

fit have you considered an audi? almost any one you like can be found in a "quattro". i had a 1989 audi 100 quattro and it ran 380k miles and was a blast to 4 wheel slide in the snow. even at 380k it didnt fully die just started smoking so i sold it before it got worse. ive always thought audis have perfect interiors too, roomy (im 6'3), classy and clean. good luck in your searchIll-timed force will be ineffective; act with precision; timing is everything. Knowing where and when to strike is more important than strength; misapplied ability is disability. Unreasonable or undue force will defeat itself

Thanks for the suggestions. I found two that might actually work:
VW Jetta Sportwagon TDI (clean diesel MPG 30/41)
OR
Audi A3 TDI (clean diesel MPG 30/42)
The VW starts at $23k new and the Audi starts at $25k. I've read a few reviews of the Jetta and all of them say that its the best car they ever owned. Pretty encouraging. Maybe a test drive will convince me to go that route.5:royst> i was junior athlete of the year in my school! then i got a girlfriend

The 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid looks pretty sweet.
The Honda Hybrid wasn't bad either, it was no different than driving any other Civic. If you want to go skiing or take it through rough terrain it might be good to avoid the civic, it's great for mileage and driving in the city but as soon as snow touches it - it turns to shit.Last edited by Cops; 10-02-2009, 01:40 AM.it makes me sick when i think of it, all my heroes could not live with it so i hope you rest in peace cause with us you never did

The jetta is a pretty solid drive, definitely nothing wrong with it. But if I would have the choice between VW and Audi, I would go for Audi, it's just better and more fun to drive than the Jetta.Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.

more fun? its just the marque talking.
The Jetta/Bora is basically a Golf, and guess what, the Audi A3 is basically a golf. They share the same chassis, springs, brakes, steering, basically everyhting bar the interior and exterior panels. They are near to IDENTICAL to drive..
I drive a 07 Impreza WRX, and im 5'11, not cramped in the slightest, and the Outback is a MUCH bigger car.
as for your criteria.
If you want a beemer that is "cheap(ish)" and has good gas mileage, you cant go wrong with a BMW 123d, if you're after something bigger, the 320d and 330/335d's are also fantastic (335d especially).
Snow plus AWD go hand in hand, luckily you can spec the 3 series diesels with Xi, so there is another problem solved. (ok its not a "proper" AWD, but whatever)
Ditto with the VW's,and Audis, all can be specced with their own haldex AWD (4Motion, Quattro)
If you want a "proper" AWD car, id go for a 2.0l diesel legacy outback (proper AWD + big boot + good MPG)
Plus the new Legacy is coming out sometime this week over here, should be out stateside by now, its an even BIGGER car, and supposedly, has a much updated interior.
As for "fun" to drive, the 335d takes the cake there, but it isn't anywhere near as frugal, and i'd be willing to bet it is out of your pricerange even in America.Last edited by Displaced; 10-02-2009, 12:16 PM.Displaced> I get pussy every day

I didn't even know the Outback had a diesel option. If it isn't a new-gen TDI though (last 5 years), it probably won't be clean burning (at least with American cars, definitely not compared to European diesels).
I'm really starting to get attracted to the Jetta Sport. Maybe I'll get a test drive in sometime. Only drawback is that I couldn't find any options for all wheel drive. I can get chains so I'm not too worried, the main thing was having a large enough roof (and a cargo rack for that matter) to mount a ski box.5:royst> i was junior athlete of the year in my school! then i got a girlfriend

Alfa Romeo Spider is back again huh? All I know is that the old Spiders usually ended up on the back of a truck being taken to a garage somewhere.
$250,000 is somewhat high for a car that has a lousy reputation for staying on the road.
For that much money and such horrible MPG's I would just get a Porsche 930 for under $30,000 used, that would get you better gas mileage than most new cars today. Great cars in the snow BTW and easy to work on...as are old 911's if you have the time and space.
This one (1981 Turbo) is for sale for $25,000
I miss my old '79 930 below Was forced to sell it.
Not that anyone is looking for a track car or sports car in general...was just in response to the Alpha Romeo.May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

it costs that much because its an 8C Spider...
They made 500 8C's and they made 500 8C Spiders.
100% carbon fibre, stongking ferrari engine, collector car bargain.
good luck finding one though, all 500 were sold sometime in 08.Displaced> I get pussy every day
