You pay the university money and in exchange the university is supposed to offer you a product, that product being education, part of that product are the lectures. You have paid for the lectures and every time you skip one, you are not getting the full product you paid for, hence you lose money. It's that simple.

Also, any good professor is not simply a mouthpiece for a book, a good professor picks his material (books, articles, etc) so that it adds to his story, books are supposed to illustrate what the professor tells, the professor isn't supposed to tell simply what the book states. Sure, if a professor chooses his literature well, a lot of what he/she says will be in the book. But that doesn't mean the professor is simply telling you what's in the book.

But perhaps it isn't a good professor? This is why I skip my econ class every day. First, the professor wrote the book, so he thinks everything in it is important. Second, he posts all the lecture notes online, and they are identical to the ones shown in class. Third, I went to class on the first day, and all he did was read the lecture notes straight off the overhead, without adding any new material or elaboration. Fourth, he gives us practice midterms, and the actual midterm is usually the exact same thing except with current numbers for statistics and different numbers for calculations.

Based on the above stated reasons, I see absolutely no need to waste my time in lecture.
