I do think that the past century has witnessed a significant change in CO2 levels, but I don't think it's something unfamiliar to geological history. I mean, pound for pound methane is 20 times more harmful, and the carbon we emit now might just be picking up slack from methane... after we slaughtered entire plains of methane-emitting animals.

I'm just not sure that current evidence warrants massive political initiatives.

Also, you rattle off a lot of jargon. Care to cite? Properly please, you guys should know better than to use editorials and Senate interviews as sources.

Methane has a significantly lower residence time than carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, therein lies our problem.

I do believe there's been growing evidence that the term 'global warming' isn't really accurate and what we're starting to witness is a lot of weird and totally unpredictable weather patterns. Thomas Friedman uses the term 'global weirding.' But he's kind of a schmuck, so make of that what you will.

Of course, we all know that the polar ice caps are just melting themselves to be spiteful.

          EDIT for facts - http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/1125/p02s01-usgn.html

          • Carbon-dioxide emissions: In 2008, emissions were almost 40 percent above 1990 levels. Even if emissions peaked today, by 2020 temperatures would stand a 25 percent chance of exceeding 2 degrees C – even if emissions fell to zero in 2030.

          • Ice caps at both poles are melting faster than models have projected. Moreover, a study published this week and not part of the Copenhagen Diagnosis suggests that the loss of ice is now extending to the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, not just the west Antarctic Ice Sheet, which has long been a focus of concern. In the Arctic, the average melt-back of summer sea ice was 40 percent larger for the 2007 to 2009 period than predicted in 2007's IPCC reports.

          • Rates of sea-level rise from thermal expansion and melting land-based ice – about 3.4 millimeters a year during the last 15 years – are about 80 percent above those projected in IPCC.

EDIT FOR MORE FACTS - http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/fq/science.html#q1

How are the terms climate change, global warming, and global change different?
The term climate change is often used as if it means the same thing as the term global warming. According to the National Academy of Sciences, however, “the phrase ‘climate change’ is growing in preferred use to ‘global warming’ because it helps convey that there are [other] changes in addition to rising temperatures.” Climate change refers to any distinct change in measures of climate lasting for a long period of time. In other words, “climate change” means major changes in temperature, rainfall, snow, or wind patterns lasting for decades or longer. Climate change may result from:

          natural factors, such as changes in the Sun’s energy or slow changes in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun;
          natural processes within the climate system (e.g., changes in ocean circulation);
human activities that change the atmosphere’s makeup (e.g, burning fossil fuels) and the land surface (e.g., cutting down forests, planting trees, building developments in cities and suburbs, etc.).
Global warming is an average increase in temperatures near the Earth’s surface and in the lowest layer of the atmosphere. Increases in temperatures in our Earth’s atmosphere can contribute to changes in global climate patterns. Global warming is probably the most talked about climate change we are experiencing, but is just one of many changes along with precipitation levels, storm intensity, etc. Global warming can be considered part of climate change along with changes in precipitation, sea level, etc.

Global change is a broad term that refers to changes in the global environment, including climate change, ozone depletion, and land-use change.

Told you stupid fucks global warming didn't exist. Don't you all feel stupid now.
The email "trick of adding in the real temps to each series ... to hide the decline" has nothing to do with "hiding evidence of global cooling." The email is referring to the tree ring divergence problem, a well-known and actively studied phenomenon where dendrochronological proxy reconstructions diverge from instrumental data starting at around 1950. In other words, studying the relative width of tree rings from very old trees can give reconstructions of the climate during those years, except this stops working for trees in Northern-hemisphere forests after 1950. There are many hypotheses as to why this occurred, but there is no definite answer yet. A good overview of the problem can be found here:
            http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/%7Eliepert/pdf/DArrig ...

Direct instrumental data clearly shows a warming trend since 1950, as well as other proxy reconstructions, however because of the divergence problem, tree ring proxies from the Northern hemisphere do not correlate with any of these. Therefore, when creating the chart of proxy compilations, tree ring data was only included up until 1960. The chart is here:
            http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1000_Year_T ...
The lightest-blue line is the tree-ring proxy. Notice that it correlates quite well with all the other proxies, although it stops at 1960. If the omitted data was included, it would have shown a clearly juxtaposed decline. This is what "hide the decline" referred to.

If you refer to the above pdf, on page 3 they have a chart that shows the full proxy, where the decline can be seen. It also shows how the proxy diverges with instrumental temperature records. No data is being hidden from the public, it is readily available (it took me all of 2 minutes to find it).

Lastly, the "trick" from the email was referring to plotting instrumental data along with the proxy data. This is a very common practice to show that instrumental data correlates with proxy data. In the chart above, instrumental data is the solid black line, which as can be seen, follows the exact same pattern as the most recent proxy data.

I'm sorry that I paid attention in Science and actually learned how an ecosystem works.

Global warming happens strictly because of the sun.
That's being obtuse about things, but alright. Most of the action on the planet is driven by the Sun and the heat we receive from it's rays.

You know, that big ball of flaming gas in space? It has hot and cold fluctuations about ever 26,000 years or so, according to real scientific data (yes, REAL science). A big burning ball of flame would naturally have slightly different temperatures every now and then.
True, the Sun does have major fluctuations on its surface caused by many different things (solar winds, its a giant ball of gas, etc. etc.), but the amount of heat we receive from its rays is damn near predictable. That's not really the concern though. The worry isn't about the Sun. It's about the atmosphere. The atmosphere is trapping more latent heat because the increase in C02 offsets the balance in our atmosphere. Too much C02 and the planet begins to heat. Though C02 is a very small part of the make up of the Troposphere, we're starting to realize that its necessary to maintain the balance that the planet selected.

It isn't that difficult to believe. Anyway, global warming was made up by a bunch of people wanting to make money and get famous, and it worked.
Well, maybe not for you. Do I think that every scientist is good natured and not out to make a buck? Absolutely not, but enough with this SCIENCE CONSPIRACY! Bullshit. These scientists tried that and got caught. How is it possible that the rest of the climatologists and geologists and geographers etc. are all interconnected on this one big lie? And then the question becomes why? What does science have to gain other than pride? They don't own the companies that profit from green technology.

Since the sun doesn't fluctuate all that often, it isn't that hard to say this is the only time it has ever done it. They also claim it is the carbons in the air that does it. That may well be true, but that causes an ice age not global warming.
The carbons in the air? Seriously? So you think the forces that cool and heat the planet are not interdependent?

                And whatever Jerome, you smartass.

When you tie the ice caps melting to the rise in temperatures, to the actions of mankind, it makes correlative sense.

If you want to stick your thumb up your ass and pretend like huge chunks of ice breaking away (which unlike 1938 have not been replaced) from our giant fresh water deposits is not cause for alarm, then go ahead. Right now the Western side is practically submerged, and the Eastern side is melting 10% faster than it can replenish the ice. They're seeing icebergs float by in fucking New Zealand, you can't tell me that's natural.

Al Gore, on purpose, flipped the graphs in his movie, to make it look like warming follows CO2 rather than CO2 follows warming and they change weather stations on purpose and if ever aught they say "opps that was an accident, sorry about that, we'll get a repair man out there" and use tricks to fire and filter staff people

Direct instrumental data clearly shows a warming trend since 1950
What you are looking at is fake data where the data once getting into the fraud team, is simply changed. a 52 is changed to a 54, a 75 is changed to a 78. the arrow, tab, delete and number pad keys are used to edit the data. do you understand?

Wasn't Hawaii created by movement of a plate on a very deep volcano that slowly created the islands... right that would explain high carbon dioxide levels.

And apocalypse, you are obtuse man.

Thirty years ago it was global cooling, then it was global warming, and now its climate change, I guess if you throw enough shit at the wall eventually something will stick... until the planets naturally occurring periods of heat cold and weather patterns proves it wrong yet again.

Like the global warming fanatic crowd promising us the worst and most frequent season of hurricanes ever before in the history of the earth this past season that ended up creating nearly no damaging hurricanes. That must be the climate change your talking about, the terrible storms that are predicted and don't happen, the terrible cooling of the planet that never happened, the terrible warming of the planet that isn't and never was happening.

Sorry you are too ignorant to understand that these scientists were just a proponent in a political fraud and were trying to keep their jobs and their research grants by delivering the news that the politicians wanted to hear. Maybe Al Gore didn't want to admit global warming wasn't real because he invested all his money into alternative energy companies.
