Since I pretty much have to volunteer to be active in the community for my performance rating I will say that it seems most of the active volunteers are the Christian groups that want to make an impact on the community by helping people. I mean I personally get time off of work to do it and it is nice to go downtown and feed some bums at the soup kitchen once in a while. The perception is that its going to be your liberals driving their priuses that care that much about giving (more) freebies to people but studies have indicated that the conservative groups are more generous when it comes to charity.

It is rewarding once in a while but certainly not all the time. I found my work for habitat for humanity to be useful as I learned a few things for later on when I might need it.
