what inspired this thread is this is the 2nd year that i volunteered at a feed the hungry thing over thanksgiving.

and i don't know what i'm thinking. i dislike the entire experience and don't think i'm really contributing to society. those homeless people could've come in and done all the setting up just as well as i have, and it would've even better because they would've gotten in from the cold.

i guess it's a good way to show girls you care
can we please have a moment for silence for those who died from black on black violence

I bet Jason only volunteers so he can scope out his next victim.
Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.

Nah, that's not actually why I do it. It's something I like doing - especially if they're organizing something here on campus and I'm not doing anything that day.

I volunteer my time to police a dying 2d game, so nerds who can't get laid have other nerds to talk to.

Perhaps those who selflessly volunteer AND DON'T TALK ABOUT IT are the real heroes in a society, hence we don’t hear much about those who do it.

Perhaps since the advent of insurance industry people no longer feel a need to be benevolent. (It used to be that if your house or barn burned to the ground everyone in the community would rally around and help you rebuild.)

Perhaps a downside of capitalism is the generational perpetuation of ‘Me-ism’, watching how people will put themselves ahead of everyone else.

Perhaps a downside technology is that it enables people to live further apart and more isolated.

I assume this thread is for volunteering without a single gain for yourself. I'd say 95% of us have done volunteering before, including myself. However, I must regrettably say that I have never volunteered purely out of the goodness of my heart. There have been a few close calls with that pure-goodness mumbo jumbo, but even then there was a small underlying gain for me.

And i'm not talking like some kind of spiritual gain or anything, stfu with that nonsense.

It should have a comma but I like it better with-out.

It makes perfect sense that conservatives would volunteer more than liberals because liberals take the easy route of helping the less fortunate (cue debate) by just hoping the government will deal with the hand-outs.

As for Christian groups, I think it's a way for them to create a community and most people go to either be a part of that community or because they would feel as if Jesus loved them less for not taking part in God's work or some shit like that. Who knows.

I volunteer because my hand is forced, usually.

Well said. Bravo. The most famous philanthropists (Mother Teresa, etc.) all died penniless living selfless lives. It's not that we don't hear about them, but its the fact that we hear about them from people who remember them. There aren't many people who can get there - but that doesn't mean we can't at least try to be decent human beings.

I have never volunteered for anything, I have been ordered by a judge to volunteer but I wouldn't really call that volunteering.

I also never give money to homeless people, unless they wash my windshield or something, at least they work for the dollar.

I do give money to charities though.
