Perhaps those who selflessly volunteer AND DON'T TALK ABOUT IT are the real heroes in a society, hence we don’t hear much about those who do it.

Perhaps since the advent of insurance industry people no longer feel a need to be benevolent. (It used to be that if your house or barn burned to the ground everyone in the community would rally around and help you rebuild.)

Perhaps a downside of capitalism is the generational perpetuation of ‘Me-ism’, watching how people will put themselves ahead of everyone else.

Perhaps a downside technology is that it enables people to live further apart and more isolated.

Well, my reasons for it are most certainly self-serving so i have no problems talking about it. But im pretty sure that I said it gives me time off work and sometimes its beneficial to me. I couldn't care less about the people I'm helping to be honest.

I agree somewhat with what you're saying here, but when has the world not been about 'me' in the minds of people. Long before capitalism there were plenty of people only cared about themselves.

Since i was there in the aftermath of Katrina, I will say that instead of getting together and rebuilding, the whole area kinda took a 'lets wait for the government to do it' attitude. The place is still pretty trashed 5 years later.

We can never have perfect intentions - I don't know for sure whether or not Mother Theresa was an attention whore or not - she very well might be. But the fact of the matter is she has done a shitload of good stuff for other people. And based on that fact, if she or any other philanthropist is a bullshitter, then at least others benefited from it.

So i'm not very caught up on the different motives everyone has for doing what they do, whether it's forced or not, personal or religious - ultimately it still helped someone. Whether or not you feel good about it is up to you.

I've also been to New Orleans and the place is a shitpile because people took the gov't money and ran with it. So there are a bunch of dilapidated houses, and a bunch of guys who rolls around the neighborhood in their chrysler 300 with 22" rims.

Just goes to show you that money doesn't always change attitude.
