happy to see christopher waltz and jeff bridges on the list of winners (although both were pretty much gimmes). i didn't really think any movie this year was worthy of getting best picture, it was a pretty boring year for film.

Hurt Locker? Perhaps good Hollywood sensationalism, but no one disarms IEDs by standing over them anymore. They use either robots or simply use other explosives to detonate them. So go see it if you want to be entertained by Hollywood, but don’t believe that these guys walk up to them, pull on a wire, and have 6 shells come out of the ground around them.

Are you sure? I heard the Hurt Locker was sued by the guy who this story was based on. That journalist guy, Boal, apperantly interviewed this guy who actually did all those things (I'm sure the movie romanticised and blew things (see what I did there?) up bigger than they really are), but from what I understand it actually happened (not in the same big style as in the movie).

This is not true.

Yes they use robots and supplemental bursts on most occasions possible, but those soldiers still put on the suit to disarm some of the explosives. And as Gall said, the story is based on the real "wild man" who claimed to have disarmed over 500 himself, while inside the suit.

I wasn't there, but most of the things Ive read from the people who do this horrific job say it's nothing close to reality. Not a great source, but this is typical of what many who were there say...
