Importing drugs into the U.S will still be in high demand and dangerous as fuck, and left to organisations with the resources to do so efficiently. I.e. the drug cartels.
You mention Portugal and how the street level dealers are mom and pop type operations which are relatively condoned by the community. But where do you think "sweet, old grandma Miguela" gets her drugs from? The criminal organisations still control the drug trade in Portugal, legalisation has just given them a wider array of street peddlers.
so even though mexico would benefit from decreased violence and increased economic opportunity for individuals, as well as lower rates of crime and even drug use, you oppose the plan because ... it would change nothing in the u.s.?

i mean i guess that makes sense it's why i oppose canadian healthcare. the thought of people in another country benefitting while nothing changes for me, makes me sick. and that's why i'm voting tea party

Too bad he was never in a position of power to do something about this...

You can't call this a war. Wars end.

mexico would benefit from allowing drug cartels to run the entire country

kids selling drugs on the corner equals increased opportunity for individuals

giving drug cartels complete immunity would lower crime guys, who doesn't want drug cartels running for office, making laws, they really look out for people who don't do or sell drugs

making every drug legal lowers drug use

i'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, so all i can say is: numbers don't lie, and legalization corresponds with less drug abuse and crime. cartels, in the long run, lose power. it's that simple.

the tea party is a waste of space and time, it's only positive purpose is that i can now positively identify douchebags. the tea party is like the ed hardy of politics. the tea party is the ultimate height of everything that is wrong with politics. all those fuckers who shunned ron paul's presidential bid, WHEN THEY COULD HAVE MADE A FUCKING DIFFERENCE, and suddenly they espouse the same shit they hated on a year ago (how convenient since we can't vote for a few more years). the tea party is the essence of what it means to sit around and bitch while doing absolutely nothing proactive. it is nothing but a front for obama-bashing. yes, there are those who may belong to the tea party who aren't douchebags, but they are still douchebags for not joining the libertarian party and instead being a government, fucking, lackey.

but no, i don't think tea partiers are any more selfish than the average human

this is a post from someone else on another forum i frequent:

not really....the local pol ice are bought off by the mafia or are part of it....down here they dont want regular folks to join....you have to be police, military, or political....else what else do you have to offer them....they have more than enough disposable foot-soldiers

the local police are just looking to pad their wallets....they wont even take you into the station, bc that would mean paperwork, boss approval,. having to share the bounty....too much like work when they can just take what is in your wallet and tell you to beat feet

if you want problems with the local pol ice....try getting caught with some drugs that aren't from the local cartel....then you are going to have some explaining to do
this happened to someone i knew....they(the local police) took him out to the monte and asked him what his favorite music was....he said rock....so they put him on a song and told him it would be his last if he didnt tell him where he got the herb...he told them and the next day that person was dead

I was just offering an alternative perspective as to the motives. But if you want to talk absolutes, then yeh I am not really keen on violent, criminal organisations manipulating public office for their own malicious purposes.
As for lower crime rates: Unless the government completely regulates recreational drugs then they will still be in the hands of rival criminal organisations who will still be killing each other, and anyone who happens to be in the way, for their slice of the pie. This is more so the case in Mexico because they are fighting for the massive illegal enterprise of importing into the U.S.
Contrary to your post, drug use goes up when the price goes down, which, due to the nature of drugs, means people develop a stronger tolerance, need more drugs, and have to commit just as much crime to feed their expanded habit.
Any drop in the statistical crime rate is mostly due to thousands of people not being arrested for using drugs.

Apart from a vague libertarian connection, I have no idea what The Tea Party has to do with this conversation.
