Science is the process of observing and quantifying the things around us in order to understand why things happen the way they do. This includes things like carbon dating and (sure enough) looking at rock samples to determine magnetism based on lava sediments. Summa, using the "Did YOU PERSONALLY SEE IT?" is the piss-poorest excuse for an argument I've seen in a while. One of the best parts about the scientific method is its built-in clause for self preservation. If it's not repeatable, it's not science. Magnetism based on lava sediments not only makes perfect sense, it's been confirmed from various locations worldwide. Here's the bottom line: polar reversals exist. They've existed for many eons more than humans or any kind of intelligent life has. However, this is not to say that we all need to start a Y2K level panic over a deviation in magnetic north. Scientists have crunched polar reversal data back to hundreds of millions of years and to be perfectly frank, there is no pattern. Fourier transforms to extract frequency data from pole shifts cannot determine any kind of regular frequency with which these events occur. So basically, I'm not about to throw out my compass or avoid getting on an airplane just because the pole is moving.

Based upon my observations of the world, and the fact that cancer has allegedly killed two of my grandparents, I can state that there is an extreme likelihood, almost to the point where it is undeniable, that cancer exists; but since I lack personal observation I cannot speak with truth or absolute certainty. That is what an empiricist (i.e. 98% of scientists would be forced to say)
