I work every friday night from 11pm to 7am on contract besides the fulltime studying. Obviously that's not enough income so I generally tend to work sunday and thursday nights aswell, going straight to classes after work. Pretty interesting to drive a forklift on friday night after two full days off classes and a nights work. Usually only get to sleep maybe 3 or 4 hours after friday's shift so I tend to sleep basically all of sunday until I have to get up and back to work followed by classes again. So most weeks, for the last 3 years, I'm doing 1 ~30 hour stretch and 1 ~50 hour stretch.

I have never thought 9-5 days, or 40 hour weeks, are long at all. Everyone wants shorter work weeks, 38 or even 36 hour weeks. 40 is nothing as long as your job is not completely mind-numbing.

how many hours a day do you guys actually do work? before i got promoted i only did about 3-5 hours of real work a day. now i only have about 1 hour of fucking around time and if it keeps going like this i'm going to have to leave

i dont understand how people can consistently do more than 3-5 hours of work a day

9 - 5 is a normal work week for a typical common employee. I understand what eph is saying though. If you ever decide to open your own business and or work for yourself, you're going to be working 7 days a week. I have my normal work day, but even after work, I am working from home for an additional 3+ hrs or at the establishment of which I am a soundman 3 - 4 days a week. A 40 hour week is standard for a common worker that disconnects from their job once the 9 - 5 job is over.

Open up your own business and watch your work day go from an 8 hr day to a 12+ hr day every day.....until you get to the point that you can hire the common worker from 9 - 5.

You get from it what you put into it, unless you hit the Powerball!

I work non-stop 9-6 M-F. Literally non-stop, don't even take a lunch break 80% of the time. Graphic design, ecommerce management, spreadsheets, managing google adwords, etc. It's annoying to see other people constantly take breaks / not working. I show up for work for 2 reasons.. to make money and to make the company money. If you are there to do anything else, gtfo.

I'm gonna be a great boss one day.

Slave drivers are not necessarily effective managers, you have to understand how to get the most out of your people. You can actually decrease productivity if you're too harsh.

People spending more time working are not necessarily more productive. And productivity is what counts.
