Lets take blockbuster for example Izor, imagine of blockbuster had donated a shit ton of money to a bunch of politicians to make redbox illegal (like the hollywood/game studio crowd did to this game) in order to pass a bill stating that that redbox should be illegal or netflix should be illegal for whatever reason. So imagine that bill passes and Blockbuster doesn't have to make the switch to their online service and movie renting kiosks and people still had to go to shitty blockbuster and wait in line for twenty minutes to rent a video game or movie. Does that move things forward or slow them down, does that make life easier for people or harder for people eventually. Right.. so blockbuster did the right thing, they progressed with technology in order to make money, which is the exact same way that these companies who sell movies and games are going to have to do. They are just set in their ways and don't want to change.

Imagine, if instead of having to go buy a DVD for 15 dollars that I will watch once that Paramount.com or Universal.com gave me the option to watch high quality fast streaming movies on their website for a dollar or two that I could watch for up to a month. I would do that rather than risk streaming a torrent and getting a virus.

Blockbuster can donate as much as it wants to politicians it wont make redbox illegal. Instead of whining how this thing was clearly lobbied by special interest groups (like the NRA and other organizations dont do that already hypocrites) tell me how it violates any of your personal freedoms. It's going to shut out illegal foreign sites like TPB from American users. Stuff that's already illegal in the US that we cant do anything about because it's not hosted in America. If they were targeting sites like youtube they wouldn't need this bill because they can already interfere with those here in America. You're all overreacting. Your personal privacy and right to free speech are not being impacted in any way.

Compare this to the government's actions vs marijuana distribution as that is what I feel is the closest parallel to how this would be enforced. No one cares about you going and buying a couple grams from your college buddies. The government is trying to crack down on the major distributors cause it hasnt got the manpower or care level to go after every little hippie that thinks hes being cool. The same thing applies online. There wont be some big brother organization monitoring all your internet traffic to make sure you're only going to legal sites. The larger sites will get blacked out and you'll have a harder time accessing them. Personally I think it will be incredibly difficult to black people out if they really want to get to a certain site...they'll have to block all the russian and chinese proxy sites and such too that can be used to get around the ban. No idea why this is so hard to comprehend

2:Kthx> Ebay is the torrenting site for every item in the world, the items have been paid for, someone else is selling them for profit after that and the company doesn't make any more money off of it.
2:GTA> its just on a smaller scale but same thing
2:AntimatteR> no1 said stealing is acceptable, at least i don't think it is
2:Kthx> so should we shut down ebay because nobody wants to buy an ipod from apple.com?
2:GTA> well if u allow torrenting
2:GTA> then u saying it is really
2:GTA> i know its wrong but i still done it
            2:GTA> doesnt mean its right
            2:GTA> or ok
2:BigKingIzor> the problem with your argument there is that once you bought that physical copy of whatever youre selling on ebay you own it
2:Kthx> I would honestly sit here and say that stores like gamestop, gamecrazy etc damage gaming companies financially than torrenting.
2:BigKingIzor> just like if i bought a movie and sold it to a friend i can legally do that
            2:BigKingIzor> because i own it
2:Kthx> yeah but nobody has go ou and buy a new one
2:Kthx> lets say I go out and buy a book, and I let 50 of my friends read it
2:BigKingIzor> yeah no one said they had to
2:Kthx> isn't that basically how torrenting works?
2:Kthx> I buy the game and let my friends borrow it
2:AntimatteR> it'd be more like letting 50 of ur friends photocopy it
            2:Kthx> doesn't really matter
2:GTA> car has been warming up for 25 minutes cause listening to this lOL
            2:BigKingIzor> of course it matters
2:AntimatteR> u gonna run out of gas
            2:AntimatteR> :P
            2:Kthx> no it doesn't
2:Kthx> if I buy a game and let my friends play it when im done or I go online and torrent the game from someone who bought it
arsen is out. 15 wins 7 losses (Out of bounds abuse)
2:Kthx> the company makes the same amount of money from us
2:Kthx> only one person bought the copy either way
2:BigKingIzor> i can let you use something i own for as long as i want...but i cant use that physical copy while you are
2:Kthx> so will letting friends borrow games be illegal?
2:Kthx> yeah but either way the company only makes one profit from the sale of the item
2:Kthx> its the exact same thing lol
2:BigKingIzor> i dont get what your argument is so im going to tell you how the kindle works
2:BigKingIzor> you can 'give' your friend your book on the kindle
2:BigKingIzor> they check it out or whatever
2:BigKingIzor> you cant read it while they have it
2:Kthx> yeah but.. ive already read it why do I care
2:AntimatteR> it comes down to this: given a way, when it comes to inflated prices on things vs stealing, people will always steal if given an ez way.
2:Kthx> the publishing firm isn't making 2 sales, they are making one
2:BigKingIzor> well thats the point...thats not illegal
2:BigKingIzor> but theres only one copy of the book floating around
2:BigKingIzor> not 50 that anyone can read at any time they want
2:Kthx> sure there is, its called the library
            2:Kthx> the original torrenting store
2:BigKingIzor> again, you're checking out a physical copy
2:Kthx> doesn't matter, 50 people all read the book
2:Kthx> only one copy was paid for
2:BigKingIzor> ??? but the other people dont own it
2:Kthx> so torrenting would be ok if only one person was playing said game at a time?
2:BigKingIzor> they cant re-read it whenever they want
            2:BigKingIzor> yeah
            2:Kthx> rofl.
            2:Kthx> that is really retarded
2:BigKingIzor> that would actually be legal
            2:Kthx> looooooool
2:AntimatteR> what if there was a way to have only one digital copy of an object that the end user could freely use and re-use on a few registered PCs. Do they even have they yet?
2:Kthx> im done arguing this, you are just arguing for the sake of arguing now

I don't really understand what people are arguing about here. Copyright laws already apply to content being distributed online. No new legal restrictions are being introduced by SOPA or PIPA - stealing this stuff is already illegal in your country regardless of where the host server is.

SOPA and PIPA are just enforcement tools for the government or copyright holders or whoever-the-fuck wants to screw with website, hosts, and advertisers. It is supposed to make it easier to enforce copyright restrictions.

Conceptually, stealing shit is wrong, but SOPA and PIPA provide a lot of power in an ambiguous and scarily abusable fashion.

@izor: its not about having illegal content its about the IMPLICATION of having illegal content. So if somebody THINKS some site has illegal content it will be banned.

I'd find a link for you where it explains but im too lazy/

izor is basically the same as the politicians voting in favor of the bill, who get handouts from the companies pushing the bill and brag about how they dont even use a computer kthx-style

point is, theyre prancing around the dream that they can take down 2-3 sites actually actively violating copyright laws, and secretly planning to take down half the fucking internet or anyone else who opposes them by sending out fraudulent copyright accusations (they dont even need to be legit)

americans are just getting deprived of even more of their constitutional rights, like the bullshit about not filming police officers (whatever happened to freedom of the press?)

whats more funny is these idiots cant see that everyone will go around all their bullshit even if it does pass, and they will literally have handed any power the united states had to other countries, effectively fucking themselves over

the only reason their stances are so rapidly changing is because of public protest making them quickly realizing that the handouts theyre getting arent as valuable as not getting murdered in their sleep

I think roxxcatt is just against this because his entire zone was stolen from an idea that a more talented coder created and his server would shut down, imagine the ones of people that would be affected.

Or if you want you could just say roxxcatt is really retarded.

Honestly you really think someone is just going to arbitrarily shut down websites because they dont like someone? People just dont care about whatever personal stuff you're doing and what you're saying about the government online. No one cares that some dipshit named roxxkatt is speaking out about some policy or how terrible the president is. No constitutional right is being violated by those laws. Again, show me specifically where they are.

Let's use more real world examples, Izor. If I buy a cd from the store, I'm allowed to let my friends or anyone else I see fit listen to it, right? There's not a rule that says I can't let other people listen to or watch the things I buy. Why should that be any different if I want to upload things to sharing websites?
