You'll probably laugh, but these songs are really great orchestral pieces:

Pokemon 2000 - The Legend Comes To life
Laputa castle in the sky - main theme

All anime movies Hayao Miyazaki(Make of Spirited away) made, he had Joe Hisaishi as the composer and producer of all music and background music. They're really inspiring.

For piano pieces, the moonlight sonata and prelude in E minor by Chopin had really touched my heart.

For violins, I'm not really a big fan of string instruments, so not much I know about it

Compare Mozart with Beethoven, Mozart is music that apparently makes you smarter, can help you sleep, and you can concentrate on other tasks while listening to...Beethoven, you can't do anything while he's playing, you have to listen to him, it's just that pleasing to the ear...

Hmm.... not only the notes but also depends on the timing of the conductor. That's the biggest problem now with Rachmaninov, if not paced properly the symphonies turn into dust.... and it seems like the only conductors brave enough to attempt it, should have retired 10 years ago... Beethoven definately was more subtle therefor it's easier to pick your own time and go with it...

My favorite classical song is one that I've heard only once - "Fanfares Liturgiques" by Henri Tomasi. I heard it at a concert, and I was immediately hooked. But now I can't find it anywhere!

Was that classical or a form of symphonic? There's a difference you know.

Classical music is related to a certain time period, whereas symphonic music is just a type of music, typically played by a symphonic-orchestra, which brings me to another note.

A symphony is a piece of music, and the orchestra is the group that plays the symphony, ya, I know...people have a hard time with that.

I think there's a big stereotype that if it's played by piano and/or orchestral, it is automatically classical music

Hmmm, interesting. I never thought about the terminology until now.... I wonder what they will call our "post-modernist" pop music in say, 1000 years.

Um,,, some of my favorite SATB's(I'm an alto!):

"Cantique" by Gabriel Faure (dark and mysterious; the best)

"Rise up, my Love" by Healey Willan (completely stunning, especially coming from his strict background)

"And Keep you" by John Rutter (somewhat cheesy, but it's magical when you're actually singing it with a good choir)

"Jubilate Deo" by Benjamin Britten (provocative considering the circumstances)

There are sooo many more that I can't recall ....

I recommend Tchaikovsky's violin concerto in D-Major. It was denounced as being unplayable that time, and finally 3 years later, it was played by Adolf Brodsky in vienna. This work was scripted while Tchaikovsky was recovering from a disastrous failed marriage and consequent attempted suicide, and efforts to reconcile himself to his homosexuality.
