Ditto to that. Reading the books first seems to make you enjoy the movies about half as much as everyone else, on average.

on the contrary, reading the books first made me enjoy them more. more stuff was explained in the books, etc. i liked the movie for the story as well as the cinematics though.

everyone should read the books, they're VERY good and the movies leave out a lot of cool stuff.

Half the audience in the theatre I was in got up after the camera faded out at the boat part. Then they sat back down when it faded back in.

Even when "THE END" appeared on the screen, I waited to see if they would be doing the Scooby Ending next.

Sauron: I'd have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling Hobbits!

And did anyone else think that the general of the Orcs (The pink ugly one) looked like the guy from Goonies?

I just saw the movie today (my exams started on opening night grr) in IMAX. There were a few things that bugged me though.

                              *SOME SPOILERS*

The worst thing is that either my mind is playing tricks on me (cause the I read the books 6 years ago) but I noticed the most changes in this version compared to the book. They had left out my favorite line in the entire trilogy which was "The riders of Rohan are coming the Riders of Rohan are coming!" and instead had them play the stupid horn when the 6,000 strong arrive at Minas Tirth... oh well at least the scene afterward still rocked

The other part was I didn't remember the army of the dead men to be that powerful. I don't think in the books they were this absolutely completely invincible army, but instead were just a major help in defeating Sauron's army. Even if they were, I think having the glowing green guys sorta cheapened everyone else who died to fight considering the army of the dead were invincible and so amazingly powerful. When Legolas takes down the Oliphant people in the audience were cheering but all I could think was "uh give that 10 more seconds and a billion glowing green guys would have very very easily handled it". Just made the movie somewhat anti-climatic I think. I also didn't like how at the very end when Sauron's eye is shining down at everyone at the Black Gate, the light when it reaches them is somewhat white instead of red like it was when it was on Sam and Frodo, just seemed somewhat inconsistant.

                              *END SPOILERS*

That said, I haven't been able to stop thinking about this movie and I have to admit it was absolutely amazing. I hope it wins all the awards it fully deserves because it was a great ending to a great trilogy.

I had to close at my work and wait for every single person at the theater to be out of the building. The last showing of Lord of the Rings started at 11:45, so I was in the building well into the next morning until 3:15. When the movie ended, I was in there waiting for them to get the fuck out. The people in the audience was cheering at the end when the screen went "The End". I wasn't sure if they were cheering because it was a damn good movie or because it was DAMN FINALLY OVER! I know I was.
