someone lives in fantasy world. Since this thread started I now have a degree in CS and yet I still suck at it and don't like it. I think my life is a mess. Only winning a triple-crown in twl will ease my pain.

I'm as done with CS as I am with this stupid bitch who totally jilted me. This IT/New Media (which basically means graphic/web design) program I'm getting into now is going to rock my socks. The professors are more laid back. The students in the program are a mix of artsy types and techno-geeks, my kind of crowd. And to top it off, every class in my fall quarter (judging by syllabus) is going to be tons-o-fun. I'm excited!jasonofabitch loves!!!!

C/C++: nice and handy, but it isn't that easy to master (took me half a year to get comfortable with pointers, memory addresses and bits operations).
Shell Script: useful ... if you are using unix.
Java: some people say it is better than C/C++ ... that is if you don't care about the bits operation speed.
Perl: very nice and popular scripting langauge.
PHP: personally I dislike it, but maybe because I used it for my last job and my last job was boring. It is like C++ meets perl.
SQL: for database, not exactly a language.
Machine Languages: use slightly different logic from the above mentioned languages, but they are very very versatile.

I love how some people who can't write program that compiles bitterly call those who can 'nerds'
BTW unlike those who started programming at 8 or 9, I actually know nothing about it until I entered uni ... and I spent the first year copy CS assignments. Then I got owned in CS, that's when I started really spending time coding. Now I am as good in C/C++ as anyone I know of (real life friends that is) who started programming before high school

Originally posted by JasonI was at RIT for a year and a half, majoring in Comp Sci. It was mind numbing. I realized I don't want to spend the rest of my life in a cubicle under fluorescent lighting programming some shitty piece of software that I could care less about. That's just me though.
I'm heading to a different school in the fall, and I'll be majoring in something like IT but with more media/design involved.
Long story short, programming is not for everyone. If you want to go into it because you think you want to make video games, chances are you're not cut out for it. Hell, even if you are cut out for it, chances are you won't like it. I'm really pessimistic about the field though. It just bored the shit out of me.
