Just think about all the DOS attacks TW has got in its life. Ez to get EA aswell I'd say. Anyway, if you really are the PR man, you are stupid. Well.. EA is stupid to think anyone is gonna pay for the game. We all love this game, and I think 98% of the players won't pay EA for the game, AND they might not ever buy any EA game anymore as you are ruining a game we have been playing for several years and where we all have alot of friends. I think (if this actually is real) EA makes a BIG mistake.
Pff I'm studying Commercial Engineer, so I know alot about marketing, economics,... so I can't believe EA would actually be serious with this stuff.

I disagree i know alot of people that buy games purely for the internet gaming abilities. I think the whole reason why virgin interactive couldnt make money out of this was because of timing, the internet capabilities and access people have is like ten times more than what people had in 1996-1997. I think at the right price SS2 will make alot of money and EA will make a profit. Btw im also doing commerce....

No. Subspace went retail in the fall of 1997 (around Thanksgiving, IIRC), and VIE went under in the summer/fall of 1998 (again, IIRC). Despite the slower connections between then and now, lag wasn't as bad as you might think. Maybe timing was an issue, but you also have to remember that as Internet technologies improve, so do game graphics. If I was browsing store shelves in 2001-2004 (when broadband began to get more widely used) and saw a box with screenshots of a 2D top-down game with such simple graphics, and I'd never heard of the game before, I'd probably pass it by.

The reason Virgin couldn't make much money off of Subspace because there was zero advertising for the product. A lot of beta testers bought the game, but not many others (see my point above). I know my friends were generally unimpressed with the game at the time, and didn't even buy it when it made its way to the bargain bins at CompUSA, Best Buy, etc. Plus, it wasn't very long before the CD crack was posted online, allowing people to play without the game CD and remove their Demo tag. Combine all of those elements with the fact that VIE was probably in the process of going under anyway, and the original incarnation of Subspace was doomed.

If VIE had spent any money whatsoever on marketing the game, and started a grassroots campaign to get the word out (whose opinions are better to solicit than the people who play and love the game?), things might have been different. By that same token, things would probably be much different now.

Count me in with the party who thinks this is a hoax. I've been a frequent visitor of several web sites that have gotten cease-and-desist letters, and the DoJ had nothing to do with them (and they certainly didn't take over the front page).

Regardless, whether this whole bit is true or not, "Subspace Two" would have to be drastically different, and I don't see that as being possible. A fully 3D game would probably be too difficult to control, and maps would have to be changed to accomodate the Z dimension. Both of those contribute to a much longer learning curve, which, IMO, is something Subspace doesn't need. Plus, if you do that, you run the risk of alienating your current user base. If the game is not 3D, then who would pay $30-50 for essentially the same game (aside from the small generous crowd who would donate to the Continuum cause anyway)?

I don't play Subspace anymore, so my emotional attachment to the game has waned. However, I'm a little surprised at the animosity on this thread. From the minute the original Subspace client was hacked to develop Continuum, the day of lawsuits and shutdowns has always been a threat. Anyone who doesn't realize that is either naive or a newbie. If indeed EA is going to start developing a sequel to Subspace (which I doubt), I couldn't blame them in the slightest for shutting down the Continuum operation to cover their asses.

US DOJ are using trenchwars.org's bandwith by hosting the images of banners etc, on it. check properties of the banner image.
I dont know anything bout computers but i think its bandwith or space..
That stupid subspace opz error continuum when you enter a zone is in some of the zones e.g TW and EG so why have the same US DOJ thing on each of the sites?
Pfft.. im confused i dont want to pay for new subspace.
