I'm planning on getting an iBook for when I go back to school in the fall, and I was figuring that I could just run Subspace on it by getting a Windows emulator. The reason I'm switching to a Mac is because out of the 10 or so people I've known with a PC laptop (including me, the laptop I'm currently using is so fucked up that when I type in this window, it takes like 10 seconds for the text to show up) a shitload have had their computer deteroriate almost beyond repair, and everyone I know with a Mac laptop has had no problems. Granted, I could spend a shitload of time running virus scans every ten seconds and protecting myself against spyware, but I don't see the point when I could just get a Mac and not have any problems.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic. Do you not have a Windows emulator just from a purity/philisophical standpoint, or is there actually any risk of fucking up your computer with the emulator?

When General Malaise tried running SS through Virtual PC like 3 years ago he'd get about 10 FPS. Maybe current macs can get the job done though. All I know is we never had success with it in the past.

Love of Game + Giant Hassle = TW Love Mac Style

Purity standpoint, it's really hard to actually fuck up your mac, because if you start trying to do something that will, you'll have everything from a "Warning: This is bad." to giant klaxon alarms that say "STOP THIS.. YOU FOOL!" Not really, but it is EXTRA hard to do real damage to your Mac, the last powerbook I heard of that was unfixable was carried by a guy that was hit by a car. Just for you Face (not really, but because of this thread), I dug up VPC 6, installed Win98SE onto a disk image, to make a screenshot.

Behold, the spectacled power (with yes most junk turned off, and with a 23 framerate) of my Emulated SS. It's -almost- playable on my current set up. Really it's a pretty jerky chat line to be honest, but before comment is made about the 23 framerate, you should know:
My Machine is a few years old, 500 mhz PPC G4
          384 Megs of RAM
ATI Rage 128-bit 16 meg video card. (SUCKS)
I didn't install the VPC 6.1.1 update thing, just regular 6.

My video card in this thing is a disgrace, but I'm expecting a Geforce model that will fit into my Cube, any day now that I got off ebay. For my mac, it isn't the card that is the difficulty, it's getting a card that you can fit into a computer that is seriously, 8 inches square. I'll keep this stuff installed and try not to think about it, until my new card comes in, and then I'll see what effect it has. OH, I forgot to mention, my ping on my Mac, even emulated, was 60 lower, 150 pc, 90 mac, isn't that a kick in the ass?

I told you I had 8 inches, baby:

Well, maybe I'll finagle my way into bringing a PC and a Mac to school... Then again, the new iBooks have about twice the stats that your Cube does. edit: except it actually has less ram

Macs are not popular computers to see. The only time I've EVER seen or heard of anyone having or using a Mac is our writing lab in our school. Granted they may be more reliable then windows, but the only reason i find this true is because there aren't hardly any game/programs/bugs and viruses that will work on a Mac, because they aren't a popular computer to have.

Good for you for having a Mac as ur serious computer, honestly. But i will take the PC over Mac any day, even with the more vulnerability.

They're a quite popular computer to have, or else, Apple wouldn't be in business. Anyway, back to why I'm posting...
I have managed through some judicious tweaks, to push it up to 35-45 frames per second, with an average of 25-28. The control lag can still kick you out (your client thinks you're lagging through the net, but I have a pretty constant 90 ping, it's the emu lag), but it made it lots more playable, and will see what I can do with the geforce, when it arrives.

Jerome, I have an Athlon next to my mac with XP Professional, and a Geforce FX, that isn't the reason I'm seeing how well it'll run.

This is getting kind of depressing, but nevertheless, I will try to explain again. Do you know what a disk image is? Or.. a CD Rom Image? like an iso?.. Well.. Macs were using those long before they hit mainstream use on a PC, and they've built their use and function along with plenty of other neat things into the OS X Operating system. As a matter of fact, on OS X, you can create a disk image.. without having to partition (which then requires a format on both partitions, and then they're stuck that way unless you re-do it over) anything. You make an image.. it's like a file.. you can specify the size.. or like with the image VPC makes, it leaves it open ended so it can grow as necessary. You can select that image to be the startup drive, etc. I'm glad that you think and are trying desperately to out talk me, but I'm sorry.. in this instance, you don't know what you're talking about. If you did partition a drive and tried to stick just windows on it, on a mac machine, it wouldn't do anything. Because of the different system architecture. Linux isn't needed because OS X includes Free BSD. To use windows, you use Virtual PC that makes its own image, so there again.. nothing to partition. I got nothing against you SuSE, but I'm telling you.. it just doesn't work that way with a Mac.

sorry for bringing this back up but im interested in this mac SS emulation. i jus got my mac a few days ago and it totally rocks. I love it more than my PC even though i've been using it for about 2 days. I got this sweet ass powerbook. G4 1.5 with 2 gigs of ram and 128 vid card of some sort. Anyway, the reason most people get a mac is because....

A.) The people have no idea about computers. Mac's are fashionable, popularized and very good looking. Think of the PC as the Camry and the Mac as the Hybrid. Both are about the same in preformance, but the hybrid has the hype. Girls are one of the top buying customers for this type of computer because it has different colors and all kinds of other cheap gimmicks. I mean, come on, if you can go to the APPLE STORE to go hang out and chat on AIM or MSN, then you know theres something wrong. I didn't really see a bunch of teenage girls hanging out at CompUSA playing with all the laptops last time I was there. Macs are friendly and easy to use. I figured it out within 2 hours after i found out you can plug in a 2 button mouse.

B.) Professionals. Plain and simple. Macintosh's are powerhouses when it comes to editing video and sound files. Not saying that PC's can't handle it but definetely Macintosh are the industry standard. If you say you have a PC and your ATTEMPTING to do video editing, then good luck finding anyone taking you seriously. Also, you would have to be some massive nerd inorder to configure a DUAL Athalon 64 computer with 10 gigs of ram. I don't even want to know how to get that working reliably in a PC. I know that in a MAC however, it costs 10,000 and you can choose that option with drop down menus. Final Cut Pro is for Mac. Emagic Logic is for Mac. ProTools works best for Mac. It is very simple.

If you only use your computer for video gaming, downloading PORN or anything else that's pretty trivial, don't get a mac. I got mine for about 3 grand and it's worth every penny since I make music. But, I would rather get a much more BLING'D out PC for the same price (3,000 for a PC?) if all I concentrated on was playing games. You could buy that new Geforce 256 video card with 6 gigs of DDR433 Ram and The best processors and mobo's on the market. Of course mines a laptop so it came with a monitor =D but you know what i mean.

Don't trash the mac if you have no business using one. Your all dumb fucks if you do.
