  • Cable modem or DSL, which is better?

Just curious what people think is the better connection of the two. Also, if you do have a service through either one, how much do you pay a month for it?

Cable owns DSL in my area
      I'd rather be SubSpacing.

because DSL runs on phone lines, DSL companies will find it much harder to get it faster than it already is. Cable technology will become extremely faster.

The up-side of DSL is that
        1) it is usually cheaper
2)because of it's phone line compatibility it will overpower cable in the end simply because there are phone lines all over the place, while for cable the actually have to install cable in the ground (or wherever they put it)

roflmao. cable is good, as long as its not COX CABLE! if you have a choice between cox cable and something else in your area, take something else. i have cox (only cable service in my area) and its sooooo shitty because they can lower bandwidth freely due to lack of competition, and because they are the direct spawn of satan. i hear the best way to go is a local, private cable company.

DSL is supposedly better because the bandwidth is not shared in the same manner that cable is. I tend to max out my allowed cable speed on a regular basis, so I don't have any issues with the sharing in my area. Cable also tends to have a higher upstream.

Any problems or issues that people claim to have is usually regional and not a design problem, so it may be a good idea to read about the providers in your actual location to see how they do. Check www.dslreports.com.

I pay just under $50 a month for cable, and DSL would also be $50 in my area.

As much as I would love to get DSL or a Cable connection, $50 plus is just too much to be spending for subspace. My 56k seems to manage pretty well as of now.

Does anyone know if they are going to make a modem better than the 56k with a dial up connection?

Or is cable and dsl going to be the only option after a 56k?

The dsl we use at the apartment I live in at college works better for me than my cable at home. I get about 140 ping on cable 160 on the dsl but my cable modem just has "issues" with it. Like if I alt tab out I get spec'd for high latency, and I used to lose a lot of shots to ploss even though it was only reporting .2% ploss, but I think that problem is gone (thank god, losing shots to ploss destroys you in league games) and replaced with the new alt tab problem.

I have only ever had Cable but I have never been happy with it. I mean sure it's always been much faster then dial-up but with games and stuff it's always been crappy. It has never lived up to it's advertising.

As to the future of dial-ups, the closest you are liekly to get with what's coming these days is a microwave sat dish, 'bout 2 feet wide doing 20gig a second. At least that's what a friend of mine in that field has been investing in. That was a few years ago so I'm not sure what has happened to that project lately, but you get the idea.

20gig/sec = killing nme before you shoot on your OWN screen!
                            Kind regards

I've seen ads for DSL at 20 bucks a month- I think you can definitely find highspeed for 30 if you're in a big enough city/market- I've been paying 50 dollars for DSL and it's a joke, getting rid of it as soon as my friend Stevie C comes over to help me out.
