The bottom line is that it probably depends more upon your local providers than anything else. Cable companies and DSL companies vary from region to region, so it's best to get opinions from people who have tried the same companies you're considering. This is especially important with regard to things like customer service.

As to the future of dial-ups, the closest you are liekly to get with what's coming these days is a microwave sat dish, 'bout 2 feet wide doing 20gig a second. At least that's what a friend of mine in that field has been investing in. That was a few years ago so I'm not sure what has happened to that project lately, but you get the idea.

20gig/sec = killing nme before you shoot on your OWN screen!
20gig/sec... what the fuck are you smoking? you could download several hard drives in a minute! who on earth needs that kind of power!?! (and if you say yourself, i will personally hunt you down for your stupidity, and a lack of anything better to do on my part)

          Heh, I'm totaly serious!

It has a few applications but no one is gonna like em. Such as you'd never keep software loaded on yer machine you would d/l it and rent it for like a couple hours then it would uninstall. You could rent full length movies and d/l them in seconds, watch them and then send em "back to the store."

That's an idea or two that he presented anyway.
          Kind regards

Cable is theoretically faster, but it runs on a shared network. DSL is fast and it’s not shared, but unless you’re close enough to a CO station it’s going to suck. I believe they run about the same price wise. Basically.. It all /DEPENDS/ on an extortionate amount of variables.

Does anyone know if they are going to make a modem better than the 56k with a dial up connection?
I forgot how much actual bandwidth PSTN has, but it's like 60k or something like that. You can only get 56k of that 60k (or so), because the phone company uses the rest of it for overhead. If you can only get old and evil phone lines to your house then you may want to look into ISDN. With ISDN they just hook up more than one phone line into a modem to double (Well, the more lines you add the more bandwidth you get, so you can more than double it.) your bandwidth.

Yer still limited by the copper lines though. They got a max of, what is it 68k or something?
                    Kind regards

You can get basic rate and primary rate ISDN. Primary rate is basically the same as a T1 even though they are all copper lines they are all multiplexed together. Think of it as a highway. Each lane can only hold one, but if you add about 24 lanes then you have a pretty big highway and you can get more cars through. That's the idea behind ISDN. But you're right, each line is only like 60k.

Divine Rides, where do you live that offers DSL and Cable for $20 and $30 a month? I have never heard of such a low price before.

Like a giant mobo, you can get all the CPU's you like but the bus speed slows public transportation for everyone.

But in this case you'd actually go fast.

If you were on a giant mobo that was powered you'd move fast too!
