I think automation is fairly good for the repitative games and many events. However, I also do think ER are probably getting lazy and not hosting original events. This really presents the problem of the who the perpatrator is? As in did the gun kill the person or the person who shot the gun kill the person. One thing can be said though is that the gun does make it a lot easier. As in bots do make it a lot easier for an ER to be lazy and still consider they're doing something for the community. Maybe the answer lies in the incentives that ER's would get in hosting unique events that aren't automated or aren't the current favor of the week. Over all I think bots are generally a good thing but they do tend to get misused.

In the subject of tournaments, they are only as good as the players that play in them. It is not unusual to see tourny in the weekends with very few players and therefore the whole experience is diluted. Think of the football world cup or olympics. If it was every year, it just wouldn't be the same. Quite frankly, the automation of the tourmanent is great compared to manually hosting due to all the spawn kills that used to happen. Therefore, automation in running the even has definetely increased the robustness of the event considerably. However, the frequency of the event is the problem.

The only solution I can think of is to restrict tournies even more. Even though tournys are run only on the weekend. I reckon there should only be one tourny every two hour (or more) maybe even alternating between wbs and javs. That way when a tounry is on, it is moderately more special than what it is now. Possibly even having an event of choice running about 3 times per day on weekends.

    So for example:
    12:00am - javs 1v1
    2:00am - wbs 1v1
    4:00am - javs 2v2
    6:00am - wbs 2v2
    8:00am - javs 1v1 or others

    lather, rinse, repeat.

Having the times well published for the weekend on when the events will be. So an even of choice could possible run about 6 times a day and more likely will see increase in the quality of the tournaments. I don't know if this will be implemented or an idea to be filed for later use or not but just my thoughts

Some are arguing that automation is the cause for the decline in population. But you can easily argue the opposite: automation has delayed the decline for a couple of years. Was it not DoCk>'s and Sphonk's TWCore and the bots that evolved from it that pulled TW out of its decline several years ago?

This so-called 'automation' made a lot possible that previously could not be done. Many members of the TW community came up with great new ideas of which many succesfully turned into reality, thanks to hard work and dedication, but also thanks to the new bots.

TWD is a great example of what you're saying on how bots have done good things for the game. Of course, theres such a thing as too far. And as you will remember there were limits as to how often things could be done then, such as weekend zombies where marathons used to attract huge numbers of people every game.

There are just too many automated arenas right now for the amount of players. Period.

Do I even need to get going on this thead?

If you don't listen + agree with Epi in this thread, you are probably close-minded and you need to shut the fuck up.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, for the love of this zone that has had a huge part in all our lives, trust the older people on this issue. TW is dying, and it's because it lacks originality and personality. No one wants to play with Bots 24/7. Would you rather play tennis against a wall by yourself or against another human being?
-Very simple example that explains things (the wall is like the bots if you are dumb)

I havn't read much of the thread so forgive me if I contribute nothing original. As one of the "older" players in TW I miss the personal touch that the zone used to have. I know we can never go back to hosted elim (nor would I want to) or staff fully in control of games like Rabbit, but side games arn't what got me hooked on TW back in 1999, people are. No matter how much I complain about the lack of sportsmanship and arrogant teenagers in TW, it's those same people that keep me logging on after 7 years. I stopped playing almost every single side game in the zone 3-4 years ago and I used to think it was due to the lack of skill required in most of them. However, when I really think about it, the automation of so many arenas makes them less fun to play in. Fully hosted Rabbit, DM and Turretwars games might have had fewer bells and whistles back in 2000, but you really felt privledged when you got to play in one. Maybe there ae so many side games now that we just take it all for granted and so many of them have lost their appeal. I also kind of enjoyed it when staff hosting games made mistakes. It made things more interesting and some of my best memories of TW involve arguing or bitching at staff

So you are saying ERs should host less and do a worse job at it?
People who are rather more than six feet tall and nearly as broad across the shoulders often have uneventful journeys. People jump out at them from behind rocks then say things like, "Oh. Sorry. I thought you were someone else."

More that games were more fun when ER's actually had to do work to host. The decrease in quality hosting was just a side benefit from that situation

TY Epinephrine for saying what I couldn't find the right words to say in my thread about Zombies being overhosted.

Gave people automated pub, elims, base, tournys, twd, twl, and they've fallen into a groove with all that. It's all "normal" for them. Their personal schema of normality in the zone of course differs from old vets' ones. even some vets are totally accepting and used to automated games.

I just really don't have the confidence in TW public's ability to go "cold turkey".. with anything. Even if taking away some automated games is the right thing to do, I think it'd be tooooooo offputting and too many people would be lost knowing that they can't simply log on and play a base or tourny at their will.

so I'm kind of on the fence. I think NO MORE games should be automated, but I think games that have been automated already should stay automated.

or can someone disprove me with history?

well yeah you'd leave base obviously, but for christ sake get rid of tourny wbduel and javduel. They're all meaningless, no offense to the amount of work thats gone into twt..
