    • hm i guess i'm one of the not many europeans not complaining about the new server. I think it's great that we finally have a server in a more 'central' place. Now there are way less extreme laggers, except some Europeans who still use these mideaval-connections. I got 120-150 ping now but at least the Americans, Canadians etc die when i hit them. I think the most Europeans have 120-150 ping now, while a lot of Americans/Canadians were getting 200-350 ping on the old server.
Too bad you American/Canadian bastards will get your asses kicked even more now by the Europeans.

Something I dont like, there were some crazy spikes already. I hope those will not get worse in the weekends. :/

ps. i used to have 50 ping and no ploss.

      • I can't remember my ploss but my ping has dropped from 220+ to about 100ms ... which is hella sweet.. people are dropping like flies around me

My "High:" ping which used to be like in the quadruple digits (thousands) is now sitting smoothly at under 200ms.

Personally I thought it would drop even more .. but since I'm sharing my Cable bandwidth with 4 other computers that are constantly downloading/uploading or playing Counter-strike/whatever .. I can't complain with 100~ish ping ...heh

ALL ping ranging from 10-120ish is NOT NOTICEABLE.

If your ping used ot be 10 and now it's an average of 250, THEN YOU CAN WHINE (but your still gonna play, and suck, and lag) , otherwise just stfu.

Only worry now is how long can Priitk support this $1000/mo. dent in his bills now... he might have to take drastic action.. maybe ads.. or move again.. or something ... who knows ...

        • Also East Coast US is about as central as you can possibly get it, you fins are lucky it's not West Coast (would be even sweeter for me, but like I stated in my previous post, my 100ish down to 50ms or whatever will NOT make a difference so I don't care) .. but if it was Wastcoast then you fins would have go through Asia or the entire North American continent to get to the server, THEN you would have way worse lag than you do now.

I'm sure there will be an increase in the TW population as well, all the other player who stayed away from TW and played in EG or whatever due to the lag will notice that the TW ping is now the same as all the other zones, thus they might try out TW and find it's the BEST ZONE OUT THERE!

And you euro's will still be playing in TW even if it moves to Australia, therefore after simple calculations, there WILL BE an increase, albiet slowly.

Due to the fact that the servers were based in europe, over half of TW's population were Euros. Although this move will upset most people, in time with the servers being located in jamerica there will be more jamericans playing. Lets then move back to Europe to piss the majority off again.

huh? ... over half of TW's population are euro's? Since when?.. if you haven't noticed, I'll give you an example.

When I play in the middle of the night (like 3am or whatever) .. isn't that usually peak-day for europe? .. I usually see like 200 people MAX in the zone.. but it usually averages about 120 people ... and when it's peak time for North America, have you seen the population? 500+ .. breaking 600 a few times.

Now from what I can safely predict, there will be even more people playing at peak-american times now with the reduced lag = attracting players from EG, SVS, etc.

And you tell me over half of them are euro's?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I gathered from my personal knowledge.

                3am? That's 9am here! Peak time for Euros would be between 7pm and 11pm (1pm - 4pm EST).

                Population at that time? 500-600.

                • My bad, MY 3am PST would be then like 12pm there? (noon)

Yeah, so my 5-6am would be your 2-3pm?.. it's still idling around the 300 population range or less.

and even when it goes on into the night, like 7pm for me, there's still 400+ .. which by then would be like 4am for you..so... yeah..

                      • As a former VP of IS for a software development company, there are 2 things that are very clear to me regarding the costs of operating SubSpace.

First, there is a huge amount of bandwidth involved, both in terms of zone bandwidth usage and billing server usage.

Second, nothing is free. Ultimately, someone is paying for that bandwidth, whether they know it or not. The going rate for a good T3 to the Internet from a Tier-1 provider is over $10,000 per month. Notice that is not a one-time cost, that is every month.

I am very surprised that any company would be willing to donate their expensive bandwidth to this cause, with virtually no hope of ever earning a dime of revenue from it. But during the late nineties and into 2000, the technology boom created a lot of strange situations, companies that were given million of dollars in funding and that sort of thing. So companies were exploring a lot of possibilities. I expect that is how SubSpace has continued to live so far.

These are different times, I can tell you. No real business can provide a service without revenue attached to it.

The reality is that our ping times and our crying doesn't make a bit of difference. I've even heard talk about creating a new more powerful SubSpace Council that would vote on decisions about how zones are hosted and such. All of that is absurd of course, because you can't vote on forcing some company to donate another megabit of free bandwidth. Ultimately this game is in the hands of those that provide it free to us, and they can literally yank the cord at any time they feel like it, or eliminate zones to get their bandwidth under control, or delete users at will.

So you see, when you talk about doing planning before making a move, it is not really possible. Sonera decided that they couldn't afford to give away huge amounts of bandwidth anymore, simple as that. Once that decision is made, they have no obligation to provide any notice, they can pull the plug at any time. The fact that PriitK was able to find hosting at all is incredible in my opinion, and he deserves a huge Thanks for making it happen.

Ultimately, I fear that SubSpace will die because of this problem. This is a great game and all, but I don't believe it is something that anyone will pay money to play.

In the future, the only way to build a web-application that is to remain free, is to distribute the hosting across many many users in more of a peer-to-peer environment, so that there is no central point that requires mega-bandwidth. SubSpace was never designed to operate that way, and would be extremely difficult to modify. However, it may be possible to do it, and with all the awesome developement that has occurred so far, I expect it may one day happen.

Given the times requested by Euro players in leagues I'm suspecting that our peak times are around 2pm-5pm EST.

                              • Space_Hiker, that might be the situation in america, where the capitalism is ruling everytihn and finacical preasure can hammer laws trought in the congress, but in a backwater place like finland most isp's (now excluding sonera) are hosting game servers, irc networks, news servers etc which are open for all the finland, without gaining any profit in doing so.

as even during peak hours I think that tw doesn't need more than 5mb/sec bandwith and comparing it to the needs for a news server it's quite little

And sonera gave up it's servers because it is doing really poor financialy, as it fucked up the umts auction in Deuchland.
