The south was never recognized as an independent entity by any major world power, indeed when it was all over the war was treated as an internal police action, NOT an act of war against an autonomous country.

You are confusing Nation with Country. Nation is not necessarily defined by borders or government, its defined by culture.

I often hear people call it "the rebel flag"

The flag doesnt even really mean confederacy anymore, even in kid rock's crappy videos he has the confederate flag flying and stuff.

Banning the swastica is acceptable and understandable, banning the rebel flag is just a joke. Not that I care or would ever use that banner.

Maybe things are difference up here in Canada but we see that flag as completely acceptable.

I really think the Nazi flag and Confederate flag are a lot different. The Nazi flag represented a group of people that formed almost solely to establish themselves as a dominant race in the world. The Confederate flag represented a group of people that were fighting for a lot of things, not just slavery. The only argument the people backing up the Nazi flag had was, "Uhhh, if you put doves on it and turn it, it's an ancient chinese peace sign." That's a lot different than the fact that the confederate flag itself didn't/doesn't stand for hate and slavery to the majority of the people that fly it. I think any of the innocent people our fucked-up diplomacy is going to end up killing in Iraq would have the same argument about the American flag as anyone in America could possibly have about the Confederate flag.
