  • Cheating in pubs

Unplug cheats seem to be getting more frequent in the pubs. What do you think of the idea that a bot detects lag spikes and automatically spectates someone for 2 minutes when they spike?

The intent would not be to punish or prohibit players who happen to live far from the server. It's the spike amid otherwise stable ping that would be detected and penalized.

I know there is a fine line here. The fundamental problem facing SS is maintaining a large enough population to remain playable. On the one hand, we don't want to spec laggy and presumably legitimate players or penalize wireless users, but on the other, people who seek a fair game will leave. It is demoralizing to absolutely have the drop on someone, only to be robbed of your kill when you see the telltale hop across the screen. Or to have solid defense of the base, and someone blows through the minefield, eats a bomb and a few L3 bullets, then comes to life suddenly and sprays the disarmed gunners. Players whose lag is high but stable are a different story. They can be avoided, or you can modify your strategy to deal with them somewhat. It's the players who goad you into thinking the fight is fair when it ultimately isn't.

The problem is too distributed and too fine-grain to be effectively managed by ?cheater calls and human supervision. It's like bullying at recess. No matter what the teachers say and no matter how vigilant they are, they cannot stop it. So it should be automated. No subjectivity, no human time cost.

Maybe laggy players or wireless users would be unable to play, and that sucks. But we should balance the loss of those players with the loss of fair-minded players who are demoralized by cheaters. If you take it to its logical conclusion, as more people cheat, more people will feel justified in cheating or counter-cheating. It will grow until eventually nobody dies, except the people who don't know how to cheat or don't want to. Then they will leave. And then the player population will rapidly dwindle until the game dies.

From what I've read, a previous version of the client that was easily hacked cost SS a significant chunk (half, IIRC) of its member base a few years ago. In the current system, I think the lag hack is too easy to do and too hard to punish to be effectively managed. Just have a bot spec people for two minutes if they spike. If they keep getting specced, then they can turn off the torrents, get a wire, move closer to the server, or just learn to enjoy voyeurism.

EG Duel already does this. It's maybe too sensitive, but I think it's the right idea.

I suspect this subject is well beaten and controversial. AS A COMPROMISE, I suggest we try a bot-enforced spike-free hour or two during the peak hours so that players who are close to the server can have a fair game during prime time, and players in faraway places and funky time zones are not deprived of the ability to play the game.

As long as there's no such crap as PING>250=SPEC like what they have in Hyperspace, things should be fine. Hyperspace was a zone that I tried hard to like, yet it just say NO to me with that stupid rule. From my expierence, geographic lag is "smooth", compared to the "jumpy" intentional lag.

Upon first reading of this, I'll be honest, I thought it was going to just be whining with little/no justification.

But I've read it all now, and you've placed reasonable arguments for us to see this through whilst also considering opposing thoughts.

Actually being out there and monitoring these spikes as staff is something that may not be as effective as placing automated regulations on lag spikes, as you said, people can easily pull the wool over staff's eyes and deceive staffers who aren't able to detect such spikes.

I approve of the idea so far, unless I see more reason against it (I have to be subject to change when it comes to this type of thing). What we'll need to do is carry out further heavier testing on the issue, see if we can find a solution around it, an example being not setting a definite lag limit, but setting a percentage increase limit on the spikes.

It'll take time, but if there's more approval or better suggestions, I'll look into getting staff to check this out.

are you suprised? you guys eat shots and mines, constantly hurl bullets in a direction 90-180 degrees from where you're facing, and half the time the bullets aren't even visiable to dodge. So you don't die with one shot, and you shoot bullets that can't be dodged. How do you not see where people get these ideas?

I mean, if we had like x-men who could "jump" across a basketball court and magically score facing the wrong way without anyone seeing the ball, do you think we'd let them in the NBA? Probably, but those guys are X-men. You guys aren't nearly as cool.

I don't necessarily want to penalize players for living far from the server. It's the unpluggers I'm trying to eliminate. Lag that is high but stable is not the problem. It's the spike, the sudden change that indicates an unplug.

Again, as a compromise or first draft, I'd say let's take the hour of highest player volume and enforce lag spike limits during that hour, and see how it goes. A simple automatic 2 minute time out should curtail the cheating significantly. The lag bot could also log the players who spike, so if a ?cheater call is ever made on that player, they can see if the player has a history of spiking, or if it occurs at regular intervals.

                    ***
As for players who are legitimate but live far away, here's what I've figured out: Fire where they immediately used to be, not where you see them. Better yet, try to shoot them while they are moving along the vector your bullet is traveling, so the delay matters a lot less.

You know our lag is bad for us as well, personally i think i could be the laggiest in all tw(and why i sit in spec a lot) sometimes bullets come at me from nowhere, and other times i cant see at all. I know a lot of people that lag a lot, and it's hard for them, but they still enjoy playing. And even if i am very laggy, i still have fun and play regularly.

Banning all aussies would just bring more downfall to tw. There are quite a large number of aussies playing the game.

yeah, don't take it personally. I don't mind austrailians with stable lag nearly as much as people who could potentially have a 30ms connection, yet they sit on wireless just to manipulate their lag.

I didn't think too much of this until I played the other day, and had a player hop akin to the jav's "jump space ability" around my bullets twice in a row. he had a nice stable ping of 90ms until said jumps, which brought him up to around 250+ for a total of 1/2 a second. I dunno bout all this "cable pulling" crap, but it sure seemed like he was only jumping while dodging, and was able to shoot as if he didn't use any energy while doing so. I called him out on it, said I was going to report him, and lo and behold, he signs off.

So who knows, maybe ppl are cheating in pubs. But does it really matter? I don't think so.

You have to realize that this is the number of user names the bot has seen from your country,
or all we know half of em are dald himself on aliases :P

So in that regard it's more than likely isn't a unique number cos those are just names seen by bot...

I might be wrong and mav did code to per IP-2-geological location,
which would mean 1 user recorded per unique IP addy...

But with how NZ and aussie internet is setup and costs,
not many ppl have a static assigned ip and our assigned IP changes ever so slightly upon each reconnect to ISP...

So i suspect that is the number of diff names from a given country...
