A buddy of mine had the game. He sold it to me for 10 bucks in late 97.

a friend of mine who lived in my dorm would sometimes ignore our calls or knocks to get him to come play basketball, xbox, drink a few beers, and even smoke weed.

so i got curious and waited to see what he was doing. Luckily it didn't involve porn... he was spending time playing a 2D spaceship game instead of hanging out.

He said it was really addictive and I should play it. Told him all I needed was minesweeper and addictinggames.com. he installed it on my computer in my dorm so he could play it there instead of retreating to his cave in the basement by himself (i say cave because it was a cathedral of a dorm room.)

I tried to play it a few times, but I didn't know any of the commands. He basically had to tell me what everything did, what different ships were, etc. Never told me about other arenas besides elim. I was pretty pissed I couldn't find a help file and none of the links from the menu bars seemed to go anywhere.

For somereason I stuck with it even though it was pretty difficult to learn how to do everything. Ironically, he gave the game up shortly after I got hooked, so that he could actually pass some classes instead of playing video games all the time.

I've managed to get him to come back and play sometimes, but the only things he'll play are elim and DISTENSION B)

My friend who used to play who had bought the game was playing it one day I stopped by his house. He used a gamepad to play and let me try warbird in public arena in TW (I think it was Diggidy Dank or something like that I can't remember). He also played and showed me some of the other zones but I liked TW best because of the settings. Some time passed and I had only played it a little bit at his house, then the "no-cd crack" version came out so I downloaded it and have been playing TW pretty much ever since (minus a break here and there).

There must be a final source, TW marketing sucks so can't happen like that.
Early 1996 I found the game on TuCows. Back in 96 the TuCows website was a site that a few times a week you'd stop in to see if anything new had been put on online from a beta test program, shareware or simply looking for utility programs and or the new Netscape Communicator announcement.

TuCows turned me on to SS

Someone in my warcraft2 clan on www.heat.net told me about it in 1997. Sadly heat.net died, and then I had to go play zone.com, and then b.net ruined the game.

The game was installed on the computers in my school. It was during the time when you needed a cd crack to be able to play for more than 30 (?) seconds. Been hooked ever since :P

Lucky how I found it with the amount of crap on there.
