      • i probably shouldn't be saying this since i didn't bother to make my own submission, but come the fuck on. this video is lame. beyond lame even. it does absolutely nothing to promote the game of subspace or our zone. it's just a bunch of cheesy inside jokes. it's not even good enough to have the curiosity-killed-the-cat effect of a viral video.

        two thumbs way down.

        • honestly, div rides could've thrown together a two minute sequence in which he showed a montage of his whithered old man wrinkly nut sack and it would've been better.

          • I agree, but I guess the problem is that he didn't make that montage.

The fact that Children's video won just shows how much effort the community put into this... everything out there was pretty poor (not that I could make that much better) :P I think we can only blame ourselves here.

                • Yeah I completely agree here.. Children's vid has nothing in it that would actually promote Trench Wars. I'm not gona lie some parts were hilarious but a vid like this is meant for people already familiar with the game. A good advertising vid would be something that's short, catchy, and displays core qualities of the game. I'm not criticizing anyone's work, but most of these vids don't have these attributes since the people making these videos don't know much about advertising or making videos.

Another point: The video is inaccesible to new audience if the name of the video is, for example, "Subspace Trenchwars", since people will be required know the game before actually searching it. You gotta position yourself in place of a person who's never even heard of the game and work from there.

I'd make a vid but I don't have time at the moment or have the lovely Sony Vegas.

The Trench Wars zone takes pride in the skill it takes to actually be competitive. Perhaps someone should record some strong players that usually do well in games and make a video compiling all the epic moments (elite dodging, rushing, sniping, etc). I know it would take a lot of time and dedication to do something like this since you'd have to be recording for a good hour or 2 to get enough decent moments that you can actually use in the final video, but who said making a good video advertising TW is easy to make. Don't bother wasting your time making a video if all you're showing is some blurry basing action or some sort of a teaser trailer or a comic clip showing nothing that's actually related to the game. Oh, and if anyone actually steps up to do this, make sure you set ss to a smaller resolution so people can actually see the spaceships and make sure the game is not skipping when running the screen recorder.

                  That is all.

Grab a piece of paper. Place a dot in the middle of it. Draw a small circle around the dot, and leave the rest open. The dot represents your knowledge. It's what you know. It is the limit of your mind's capacity. The circle around the dot is everything that you don't know - but you know that it exists. And the rest of the paper is everything that you didn't even know that you'd never know - that exists or has the potential to exist.

                        • hey children if you're reading this, can you put up a balloon in the vid that says "click here to visit www.trenchwars.org to play!" or something along those lines? That way people will at least know what the video is about from the beginning if they're not a part of the TW/continuum population...

                          • Does anyone have a copy of that old flash intro I had for the cripples site? It probably wouldn't be any good for promoting ss to people outside of it, but elements from it might be useful.

                              Someone gets it!

Those videos aren't going to get anyone into TW. I've been playing this game on and off for the last 10 years (mostly off) and I hae never really 'gotten' into the community or anything. I think I have some perspective here.

First off, I don't think it's particularly hard to get people to try this game. Whenever someone watches me play, they almost always get interested enough to try the game out. Keeping players for more than a few sessions is harder. The community doesn't do much to help. Half the people in pub act like 15 year old right out of the 90s, no one is helpful and heck, you can get called a newb for doing things that you actually should (IE: People calling spiders newbs while they are basing in pubs). Not much can be done about that, but then there is also the problem of 'no good information anywhere'.

I decided to youtube the game like a week ago. I suspected there would be perhaps something like a Javalin guide, or examples of people owning in Elim or whatever. I just wanted some content to learn more about the game.

Of course I got nothing, but what I assume was jabjabjab's..... lack luster video. When I lamented the lack of information in pub, the only comments I got was 'lrn 2 aim' or 'omfg an 8 year old could jav right'. Yeah okay. A friend of mine wanted to learn how to Terr. The best I could offer him was to watch other terrs for awhile and then to be prepared to have everyone hate his guts while he learned the ropes.

I come from the fighting game community. If I'm curious about something, theres probably a guide for it. If I'm curious about how to play a character, I can youtube it and watch how a skilled player uses the character. I've gotten people into fighters just by showing them high level match videos that I thought were cool. There is none of this for TW.

Forget hype videos or joke Hitler videos, there just needs to be real, in game content. A video that is a basics guide for beginners, or various tutorials would help quite a bit I'd imagine. The best art, even the random clueless guy in Pub who TKs everyone all day on accident can learn something! From what I can gather, half the community doesn't even know how to play the game. It's terrible. I'm actually shocked theres no one in the community thats doing this already. It seems like a normal part of healthy communities for players to want to show off their skills in videos. I'd do this my self if I didn't suck balls at this game. I might just record my self playing it anyways, just so theirs some honest to god real gameplay videos of this game online.

This community still totally baffles me.

                              • Hey I know this thread is pretty much done since the contest is over and all. I was just wanting to know what the best software for recording while playing is. I've tried a few programs out, but they all seem to drastically kill the framerate and make it impossible to play.

I'd like to make a good vid showing gameplay, I was looking on youtube and only saw a few with decent looking gameplay.

                                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPnQMBv9paE
                                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3fdvEzqYkM
                                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pMN9R2ijv0

not saying the vids are particularly good, but the framerate seems decent. Any help would be appreciated!
