Trench War Public Arena Tips by a 3 week Noob:
(05-03-2003, WiseCherub(Alex))
*Intro:
Why write this? Well I'm sick of seeing some arrogant experienced players laugh at noobs and not helping them out. Eventually some noobs turn into great players if given the chance. Therefore noob != lame....
But an ignorant noob is lame; not patience to learn and persevere. I find ignorance is not bliss in SS, often it means many many losses.
When I first started, I asked for help; and I got stuff like...yeah
press ESC-Q with a snicker. I can't remember who, but I bet this happens sometimes with others; luckily someone helped me in the end with my question. I was of course not stupid enough to fall for this ESCQ after only playing
for 2 minutes...heh..
At one time everyone was a noob, and they are important in keeping the game population up. Players is what really makes an enjoyable game session.
I will try my best from recall/reading; to point out some tips to help others if I can. It won't be perfect, and will seem redundant to more experience players. Correct me if my assumptions are wrong, so I can learn too.
Perhaps this may help out lazy readers, so they don't ask too many questions during gameplay. I had to spend time looking around for information about the game.
Heuristics (discovery) is the key to success; if you fail, keep trying and learn from your mistakes.... and you'll get better!
*Controls / Commands:
I will only list and explain the most important commands.
ESCAPE KEY (ESC) = Commands menu (Press ESC again if you want to get rid of)
-Obviously keep your right hand on your cursor keys at all times, and left hand on shift(afterburner) and control(fire) or tab(bomb)
-Press ESC to find out more other commands, self-explanatory.
+BANNERS: There is a builtin banner editor....draw it, and save in
Continuum main directory, and while playing press ESCAPE-B to set banner bitmap graphic.
F1 = Help menu (Keep pressing F1 to get rid of)
Try to use the above to learn on your own, and don't ask/bother other players with simple questions.
F2 = Current Scores and freq player rosters (keep pressing to get rid of)
-Good idea to keep a look at other player stats, so you can assess who are the aces out there. Don't simply look at score (total points), look at their Rating and Average (win/loss %).
+Ship Attaching: I had trouble understanding this myself, you don't have to be near or on top of a terrier to attach.
1st Find out who is a terrier on your freq(team) or read your freq chat, most terrier pilots say "ATTACH TO TERR AT BASE/safe...etc"
Simply use F2 to view freq team roster, use Page Up and Down key to move ticker to terrier pilot.
Now just press F7 to attach to that terrier, you'll be a turrent, if you want to disembark press F7 again.
*Very useful for slow moving ships to get to specific location fast.
**This really adds an interesting element to the gameplay.
+Frequency (Team) Selection: (usually numbers 0 or 1)
Example:
=0 (selects frequency 0)
=1 (goto 1)
+Team Communications:
Communications is key to helping out other team players in maintaining or attacking a base.
//text.....
eg: //I'm chatting to only my freq
+Private communications (to chat with a specific player)
eg;
;playername;hello there
? mark command: (press F1 for help list)
?arena for arena window and selection.
*The 8 Ships: ESC#(1-8) eg; ESC1 for warbird
Speed...Fire...Description...
Warbird: 2ndfastest...single fast high damage bullet (but slow fire rate) also not able to bomb
-Easiest general purpose ship to learn, if you are good at piloting and aiming; this might be the ship for you. It is for me, though I admit not the perfect aimer.
-This ship is a good interceptor (a lev hunter) and good in open space. It can be good in close space, but you must be good at dodging and have fast reaction responses.
Javelin: fast-moderate...wimpy rear fire bullet ((can multi)defence) but lethal 1 bounce bomb
-Has cloak/stealth, this ship is a good base defender or assault ship. Don't play around in open space unless you are a Jav expert.
Spider: moderate...wimpy fastrate forward fire bullet (no multi and bomb)
-Excels in close space, good at base defence or holding the lower base gathering line. Skilled spraying of bullets is key, don't let your prey escape.
-In TW, spiders don't have cloak.
Leviathan: slowest...forward bullets and lethal L3 bomb
-Basically a flying big guns ship, but super slow (should have 1 or 2 defenders)
Use repels and warp to defend against attackers. Try to collect enough bounty so you can go LT (Leviathan-Terrier) turret combo.
-Good Aiming is key to being good at this ship.
-Bad Aiming, and killing your own team mates is a no-no.... Think before you fire, cause you could kill everyone in your base.
Terrier: fastest...wimpy forward bullets (can multi) and no bomb
-A Terrier is a Carrier ship, every freq should atleast have one,
they are key to keeping a constant (fast ship return rate) to a
focussed area in attacking or defending.
-They have many abilities and can be complicated to use.
Warp, burst,Attach,Xradar, Portal
-Excellent piloting is key here, and good multitasking response.
++XRADAR; should be used more often, and to alert other players
of weasels trying to sneak into base.
Weasel: moderate...slow lethal bullets can multi and no bomb?
-Great for people who are sneaky and patient.
-Has cloak/stealth and should be use when needed.
-Never use this ship to spawn kill, not popular! But use it to take
out key ships within a base or have a lot of bounty.
Lancaster: moderate...moderate speed multi bullets and no bomb
-Useful base or (close space) defender ship, good for not perfect
aimers because of the lethal multi fire bullets.
Shark: moderate...no bullets but mines and bombs
-Thee bomb miner (or mine clearer) ship every base should have one.
-Unfortunately, Sharks can be a suicidal ship, but if properly defended
you can keep out (or frustrate) the baddies.
++NOTE: Each freq is limited to only laying upto 8 mines, each shark can only lay 4 mines. Therefore, more than 2 sharks per freq is a waste in most cases. However, they could be use for faster shark backup rate and mine repeller.
-Shark has repel/cloak.
=+= Note: I'm only experienced with Warbird, so my assumptions on other ships may not be accurate; players who are more experience with other ships should correct me. I'm still learning about other ships... Obviously, being skilled with other ships can greatly help out your team at certain times.
**IMHO(In my humble opinion) No ship is the best, every ship has their pros/cons. It completely depends how you use that ship and what ship you feel most comfortable with. I like warbird because it is easy to fly and it is fast, I find the terrier very hard to control...it is like it has tons of inertia....heh..
*Map:
-Get familiar with Public Arena map, so you don't have to press ALT to view the whole map, memorize and know what certain areas are used for.
-After playing I've come familiar with terms used for areas.
-BASE: The flag room at the TOP within the base structure.
-ROOF: Outside area on top of base
-LOWER BASE: Below BASE, staging area for base assaults.
-LEFT or RIGHT TUBES: alternative ways to get to lowerbase with less traffic.
-SAFEZONES: (LEFT, RIGHT, OR BOTTOM) a place where you can take a break or be leviathan safezone firing wimp. Also don't forget the bottom left or right mini safezones.
-SPAWN: mid-bottom area, lots of traffic.
-Don't spawn kill all the time, considered highly lame. I admit, I do it, when someone spawns me just to make up the difference.
There are 2 main Modes of gameplay: ASSAULT and DEFEND.
How you do it is upto you, and won't discuss further. I have to keep my edge to survive. Watch and learn from other players, don't ask-- just observe and think.
*Conclusions:
Most ignorant people will say SubSpace is a mindless video game, but in fact it is a very addictive multiuser interactive game which offers many dimensions of gameplay.
With caution, patience and creativity; your gameplay will improve since most players just fly around in berserker mode shooting any blue blipthey see. I guess it depends what you want out of the game; I want more than just mindless shooting, I like strategic challenges or goals.
I figure by writing this text, I might help out a few people that are in my shoes, and I don't pretend to know more than more experienced players who have been playing for years (I have respect for you all).
Thank you for considering what I have written, it is in my best hope more total noobs will get the big picture sooner and thus improve gameplay for us all.
