Supporting and including new players for sure is important, but do not forget that they will have to look around first. Forcing them on anything isn't a good idea imo. The installer (from what I have heard) puts them on default chats, which is a good thing as long as those are used, supported and not overcrowded to the point where nobody can read it anymore (it will be one chat for all SSC zones). However, that only works if they leave the default profile untouched or only enter a new username. Besides, using a word that is generally an insult on this game as the chat name for new players we want to keep might not be the smartest decision, but who am I to judge ;-)

Default squads is something I would not support at all. For once, because it would require biller access we do not have (it just won't work as indented through the installer for several reasons), because we would have squads spread over multiple zones (new players will try around) and also because it already throws them into a fixed gameplay style they might not like. It would be much better to let them decide the speed and direction of progression in the game. For that we need to show them the options: Host team vs. team matches which do not require twd signups, keep pub fun to play (prepare for multiple arenas on overcrowding, have an eye on rule breakers), keep elim style games running, show them stuff like pictionary, balance, mazes, hockey, starcon, battleship and all the other fancy non-standard gameplay arenas that give TW a special edge.

All steam players will already be joined to a chat (I believe ?chat=newbies). That comes with the installer.

I definitely agree for making pub squads relevant.

Ya I agree ..squadding should be the direction we send them ASAP. What if we made 4 pub squads? Just have them sign into one of 4 and keep the rosters as close as possible in numbers? Have some players volunteer to cap them and get them games in twdd twjd twbd twfd & twsd competing verses each other. They won't care too much about ladders at that stage but can still see how it all works and try and to be best pub squad so they can get the thrill of winning. Just have experienced players doing the challenging and adding for the games. Even allow them to graduate to become assis so they understand commands with our bots. I really personally would like to see a mandatory ?squadjoin for all new players and also a mandatory ?chat=help for all (which according to dezmond is already in place !! )

quake got to the front page of steam when they decided to hop over to their platform

we didnt get any population boost that stayed

in the start we did, but we're just back where we were before steam

i predict that'll happen with ss

if the servers can even hold the influx of players (could even be in the 1000's and quickly taper off)

quake's infrastructure crashed on the steam launch

do we have ddos backup plans in place?
