  • In-game vote: res cap of 1920x1200 for TWDD

As it was seen as a pretty contentious issue, and as forum polls are not exactly the most secure or accessible for all players, there's now a vote in-game for the resolution cap of 1920x1200 in TWDD. This is how resolution limits were originally removed in 2016, so it seems only fair that a similar vote is used to reinstate a res limit.

The vote requires a TWD-enabled name. Voting twice will result in a substantial ban. The polls close Dec 1.

To vote, ?go TWD, PM TW-Vote with !polls, then !view 23, then !vote 1 or !vote 2.

Here's a copy of the arguments in favor and opposed as they appear on the bot:

    IN FAVOR:
+ The majority of players can't play above 1920x1200. It's a high but fair limit.
+ Higher res than this is an unfair advantage. Dodging is easier and shots that were radar shots can be tracked on screen.
+ It completely changes how the game is played. SS was not created for ultra-high res. It shows more of the screen rather than scaling ship size.
+ Ultra-high resolutions make DDs slower and less exciting due to the change in play style.
+ Resolution limits in TWD should be the same as in TWDT and TWL for the sake of consistency and skill transfer.

    OPPOSED:
    - We've had no limit for years now, and it hasn't been a problem.
    - In 2020, many people have monitors that go above 1920x1200, and perform best at their native resolution.
    - Using a lower resolution than native means you have to either run the game in a window, or run non-native and have a blurry/distorted image.
    - Windowed/non-native res is distracting and unimmersive. It's hard to play as well at non-native res, so it punishes players for their hardware.
    - Res limits force players to change res (quit & re-enter) just to play TWD.
    - TWD is not as serious as TWDT or TWL. It's about having fun. There's no reason res limits need to be the same as in more competitive leagues.

I have never had to play this game in windowed mode, all 3 aspect ratio's can handle 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 (except really ancient screens that are just too small and I mean if you're playing on a 12inch toaster still, that's your own choice). Unless 4k monitors are different?
Siaxis> yo it was way harder to kill Rage then beam in that dtd

rylo> 1.5 mil for whoever kills renzi
    (10 seconds later)
rEnZi is out. 17 kills 10 deaths. 2 players remain.
P TW-Pub> rylo sent you $1,500,000, you now have $4,047,199.

If you're going to do a thing you should to it to the best of your ability or don't do it at all.

Yes, just about anyone should be able to use these resolutions. There will be some scaling and slight distortion. This was one of the reasons in favor of removing limits from when we voted in 2016, so I included it here.

So what you're saying is, people lied in 2016. That about the gist of it?

I've never met anyone who can't 'downgrade' to 1080p. Lots of modern games don't even go up to 4k, so why would anyone own a monitor that is unable to go down to 1080p? That's just a laughably stupid argument, and frankly, anyone spending that much money on a rig in the first place either has enough money to have two monitors (if their 4k monitor can't do other resolutions besides 4k in this hypothetical alternate universe) or shouldn't be playing a 20 year old game on their supercomputer anyway.

Frankly, the ENTIRE game shouldn't go above 1080p, not just TWDD. This includes pub and everywhere else. Nothing should be higher than that. There's no reason for it.

but in triple monitors, amd eyefinity mode you can see the entire map on 3 monitors. I tested this in the past back in 2011, and I think people spending their hard earned money to play the game at higher resolutions, and map viewing mode, should be allowed.

It's not the monitors at fault, it's the shitty continuum client.

I'd say that's a pretty extreme view. You can get a decent monitor that runs above 1080p for around $200, certainly well within the norm for an average desktop PC. But it doesn't really offer much in the way of benefits in terms of SS other than for WB dueling. Otherwise it's actually generally worse because you're focused too much on less relevant information on the outskirts. It's I think better to play at less than 1080p for basing especially.

As for the claims of outright lies, I don't see how it's a lie to say that distortion occurs with downscaling, particularly with SS. Try choosing a non-native res and observe the clarity (or rather lack thereof). It's not all that substantial and I don't personally think it has a lot of merit in terms of justifying allowing larger resolutions, but it is still a factor and one that some people do care about. Calling it a lie is not acting in good faith, concerning yourself more with your interest in the outcome than the argument itself, however minor.

Here is some information that the pro-removal side included in the 2016 vote:

              NATIVE RES VS NON-NATIVE: http://www.howtogeek.com/119117/htg-...-is-important/

              * Native: Optimized for your LCD monitor. Quality is sharp, colors are correct. Balance between size and fluidity of objects.
              * Non-native: Downscaling your resolution. Distorted, blurry image. Size of objects on screen irregular and broken

It's even worse than native vs non-native. Continuum just totally fucks up rendering for a lot of people running non-native.

They can literally all downscale to 1080p as well, so the original argument is still a lie.

...The original argument never said downscaling wasn't possible. In fact it made the effects of downscaling part of its key argument.

In order to talk about the effects of downscaling, first you've got to admit of the possibility of downscaling. Do you understand how this is a little exasperating? Are you, by chance, trolling?

Okay so after thinking about it I decided to go to elim and try out a higher resolution, or to be more specific 2560x1440. After 3 elims in a row, and almost a 4th before server lag kicked us all into spec, I think it is safe to say it gives way too big an advantage.

After server lag went down a short while later I went into a DD with 1600x900 resolution and it was like showing up to do a porno with erectile dysfunction. The difference is MASSIVE.

I honestly think anyone should be able to use any res their client allows which the game allows for it, if the game never intended bigger resolutions then it would be make sense to keep small res.

But i used a 27 inch screen and use 1440p which is 2k anything above 4k is stupid and it ruined the play as the ship is stupid slow.

                          Allow 1440p and 1080p

Exalt is a fucking retard to not understand the client or have any knowledge on the game, he sucks at this game and get owned every time irrelevant player.

Qan matter in fact no one had an issue with res limits until this stank breath of a staff member that is a disgrace to the community and stinks up the zone aka known as beam made a forum post and cried about it and he specifically names me as the reason why he want limits, clearly qan you can see this is a personal issue for beam because he sucks at warbird and cant manage go + with res or without res caps.

Game was released in 1997. You had to go to the store buy a monitor that went to 1280x1024 if you wanted to see more stuff. Then widescreen started happening later. Game/zone was designed with visibility this in mind. I play on a 27" 144hz 1080p gaming monitor and even I want the resolution lowered back down to 1280x1024 tbh. Problem is the game doesn't upscale, it just gives you more viewable distance.
