As I'm sure most of you are aware, the league is in a sad state. I spent the past six months playing with Juans and enjoyed playing with a new group of guys. I feel like we had the line to compete as underdogs and had a decent shot at winning, which was my intention all along. However, over time, I realized I still wanted to compete in LD and LB after the narrow losses last season. I tried to look for exceptions and ways in which I could stay in Juans while still playing LD/LB and looking for revenge, such as joining separate squad rosters for separate leagues. I felt that after all the time I had wasted in this game, I was owed at least a bit of deference in being allowed to play another league which would prevent me from damaging Juans and hopefully add a bit of competition to other leagues.
What does this sound like? Entitlement. Entitlement is the plague that has ruined TWL for years and has undoubtedly continued into this season. I'm certainly guilty of it, as are many of you. The fact is, the league owes us NOTHING. Most people in the league feel they deserve to win and therefore congregate in the top squads to increase their chance of winning a useless medal on the TWD website, often while contributing nothing. People complain about the lack of competition in TWL, while at the same time sending out messages to banzi, blood, and underground to add to their line of 15 warbirds. No one wants to be Michael Jordan. Everyone wants to secure a line of 10 backups in case someone can't show, in a game with an active population of 200 remaining. Just earlier, I was bitching about how terrible TWL was when MHz cut into the conversation. He said the following:
Commodo> that's the dilemma that's faced a lot of good players, playing on low-tier squads
Commodo> dont need to change the rules because of it
Commodo> ease, congrats on playing on a non-favourite team
Commodo> really, gj
Commodo> but don't be a martyr about it
Mhz's history is full of helping out mid-tier teams, and as a result he now feels entitled that it's his turn to be on the opposite side of things. This is the exact mindset that is ruining the league. No one is owed anything from the past, it's about the NOW. We should all spread out, and if that's not feasible at least prevent the horde of backups from joining the roster. I certainly played a part in the events that led us here, and tried to do my best this year to change things by example. Not a single baser or warbird joined Juans, and inevitably ended up on 1 of 2 squads for LB. In LD, players like Riverside and Jones led the way by joining Vikings. But when no one spread out, Riverside did the only natural thing he could do; extend his middle finger to the league and join a stronger team.
You're probably thinking that if I wanted to 3 league, I could have joined a weaker team like Lego, and you're definitely right. However, I chose burn to prove a point (and to see the chaos unfold). No one cared about me sitting out ld or lb and not contributing, but the second I joined the burn roster I got a bunch of angry PMs (most from people on stacked squads). No one cared that the competition would be weaker if i sat out (yes it's my ego talking but I'd like to think it's true). They simply saw it as a chance to collect another medal and not worry about actually playing the game. The best part though was the people making comments such as "How could you do this to Juans?!" while at the same time PMing me a day earlier trying to get me to join their squad.
If I wanted to compete in 3 leagues the general consensus was "too bad man you should have joined a 3 league squad." Why should a squad like Juans be held back just because they only enjoy jav? Why should I have to hurt Juan's jav line if I want to play all 3 leagues? It simply makes no sense in this current stage of the game. Everyone is stuck in the past with the image of this mildly competitive TWL, and is unwilling to look past the dwindling number of players and squads. I brought up the idea of a separation of leagues and was told by ricko that it would "destroy the integrity of squads." What integrity? There are barely enough squads to fill out TWL and turban practically had to pay people to participate in LD/LB. The league would be a much better place if leagues were split up by time of year or if players were allowed to play on different teams. Sure it would be vastly different, but isn't different what we need? If leagues were separated currently, I would not be in burn for jav or base as I'm definitely not needed. Due to this supposed "squad integrity" though I hurt Juan's chances and joined a team where I'm not needed.
Something needs to change, and based on every team making the playoffs this year anyway I think there's still time to fix this. I would much rather play for the challenge of winning with a new group in jav, and leaving Juans disappoints me personally. The fact is though, if I made this post while still in Juans, not a single person would care. Most people still playing care nothing for the competition.
