Roundabouts "improve" the flow of traffic not increase.... in actual reality everything keeps moving... people are less frustrated and things don't get dangerous. You don't get huge queues on roundabout (normally) and there is less aggravation

I believe the most common crashes are rear hits? where another driver crashes into the back of you because you have suddenly stopped or he was not concentrating... On a roundabout this is less common because most of the time you don't have to totaly stop when joining them.
If all your cross junctions had islands (we call them that too) instead my bet is you'd get around faster because you wouldn't have to stop every single block. Plus there'd be less accidents once people got used to them.

Anyway i really don't care because i don't live in america :grin: and i'm quite happy with my quirky roundabouts/islands hehe B)

It seriously does... Roundabouts are continuously moving, at intersections you have to wait for the light to go green...

You probably get a lot more crashes at intersections than we do at roundabouts, they're a lot simpler than you think.

I think most traffic accidents in England are caused by tourists who didn't remember to watch out for cars going in the wrong lane

Roundabouts are good in small intersections, where the traffic flow is constantly quite small.

But once the traffic jams up, no one get's anywhere if you always have to watch out for the one driving in the roundabout. In intersections everyone has to wait an equal amount of time because the car coming from the right goes first.

Roundabout: Give way to cars from the right.
Going left? Left hand lane.
Going Straight Over? Left hand lane.
Going Right? (Anything past Straight over) Right hand lane.
Unless markings say otherwise.

And what if you're on the inside lane and need to turn, but there's someone in the outer ring? Keep driving until there isn't? That's dumb. Simply put, roundabouts won't work on a grand scale in the US. We're quite happy with our traffic signals and stop signs.
