Both Russia and China are communist in the sense that the word is usually used as.

Marx's stuff was about idealized Communism, a system that has rather minimal basis in reality, since among other things it involves simultaneous worldwide revolutions and so on.

Since the only actual Communist governments that have occured have all turned out in a similar way, it makes sense to call these governments 'communist' as opposed to only going for the idealized version. You could as easily say that that the United States is not capitalist, because the government interferes in economics, but it is capitalist in the main sense of the word.

Edit: Agreed it isn't authoritarianism though.
