To each his own. I actually got the rec from amazon's list. I just read the review for Pitchfork. And actually, I hate most of Pitchfork's reviews (too indie glorified for my tastes).

But I def think there are some ppl here who would like this type of hip-hop.

Where in NJ are u from btw Vyk?

The beats have a Euro-twist to them due to that dutch DJ guy, which I like, but the MC is just some run of the mill lyricist. It seems like he was just kinda thrown in the mix with the DJ.

It's not awful, but it's not awesome either.

Don't listen to Vyk either, he's not real awesome at understanding that some people might like music that he doesn't.

what a crock, you're just saying that because of the dream theater discussion. note that i didn't say anything about any of the death metal stuff you listen to, which i don't like but which i- by and large- respect.

for me there are three types of music: stuff i like, stuff i don't like but can completely understand how someone would (i try to minimize this, i call it expanding my tastes), and stuff where i DON'T understand how someone could like it. the Foreign Exchange (who i believe you nailed with your description, incidentally- their MC is a fucking wash, and I could barely discern the beats while I was busy hating him so I don't even know how equipped I am to talk about them) is more or less one of those groups. i respect the RIGHT of other people to like it, i just find it utterly baffling. same with DT, although i talked with froe yesterday and I guess I do see how someone would appreciate it (though I still think it's shit).

sufficient: i live in river edge, it's near paramus in bergen county. how about you?

Nah, you seem to have a pretty poor grasp of music---or at the least hip hop and poetry, as exampled by your misinterpretation of the lyrics on The College Dropout.

I don't mean that as a personal attack, since music appreciation---as well as interpreting poetry---tends to be subjective, but sometimes it's kind of obvious what things mean.

I think I'm one of the few ppl who think Kayne West was a lil overblown. His singles were all amazing ... but once I listened to his entire album ... it was only bleh ... ok. Still his singles were/are hot.

I like Sage Francis' lyrics out of everyone I've heard thusfar in my life.

you really think i'm the only person who realizes just how much of a showboating dumbass kanye is? don't make me laugh.

edit: further penis-waving here, i'll talk more about kanye later

I said nothing about him being a "showboating dumbass". I said you misinterpreted his lyrics, and based on your previous comments in the Kanye West thread, you seemed to have a poor grasp of hip hop and poetry.

However, showboating is definitely a aspect of hip hop culture, which you don't seem to understand either. At the core of the four elements, competition was one of the driving forces of moving the culture forward. You can't have competition without the ego. MC's have been showboating since back in the 70's when all they had was 2 turn tables and a house party.

i didn't. you claimed i "took [him] out of context" without actually showing any situation in which i did. there's nothing worth interpreting in those lyrics except the fact that he's an infantile hypocrite.

and based on your previous comments in the Kanye West thread, you seemed to have a poor grasp of hip hop and poetry.
oh, really? kanye says he doesn't fear the cops and that means that i don't understand poetry? this straw man barely even qualifies as laughable

and using the same insults and ego-boosting lines without bringing anything new to the table except a patched jaw and a sense of being both the secular and spiritual saviour of hip-hop is getting older by the minute, hence the (IMO completely apropos) kanye backlash that occurred as the year progressed.

Whoops, my bad. Seems like it's just everyone else who calls him hip-hop's savior. He just sells T-shirts saying "Hip-Hop Is Back: Kanye West."
