  • "World View" - help me out

Give me some ideas on "supporting your claim that the world is essentially a positive place." You can use references from history, current events , person experience etc. If you help me, thanks

although that happiness might mean doing something solely for his own benefit (egotistical utilitarianism) and at the expense of others - war, stealing, lying etc

edit: guess thats what jerome already stated though

you could say that what is positive for one culture isn't necessarily positive for another, and the differences often result in war. so what is 'positive' is subjective

Are you speaking strictly culturally and among humans? When you say that the world is a positive place", I think of hiking in a national park, standing on the edge of the grand canyon, driving around stoned on warm spring day.

mention Thoreau and the idea of Transindentialism. That always makes the teachers randy.

If you changed it to explaining why the world is a negative place I bet you'd get a lot more ideas and support. It's going to be pretty damn hard to PROVE the world is a positive place, or at least even support that opinion. Good luck.

The world sucks because I have to use the fucking oven to make these franks in a bun. This product is made in canada, no wonder it's not microwaveable.

Not an easy task for someone as pessimistic as I am, but I would probably work from the position that over the course of human history, (most of) humanity has greatly improved their knowledge of science, cultural understanding, and medicine, and how this evolution has facilitated the advancement of human rights in virtually all modern countries.

From there, I would use the body to support my thesis with individual references to how science has improved the world in relation to human rights, how cultural understanding has improved the world in relation to human rights, how medicine has improved the world in relation to human rights.

Obviously, it will be easier to clearly construct the individual arguments that science and medicine have furthered human rights than cultural understanding, but you may want to avoid referring to world exploration, since most people associate that with slavery, the spread of disease, and greed. However, if you try and approach this from the perspective of anthropology, there should be enough to focus on. The most important aspect being how the understanding of individual cultures and through their art, architechture, and understanding of astronomy has facilitated respect of those cultures. And how cultural respect eventually leads to human rights.

Like I said, not an easy sell. But if you just stick to the big picture--overall human evolution--you should be able to squeeze out 5-8 double-spaced pages.

I find this rather vague and also hard to do.

There is a counter argument to nearly every thing anyone can say positive and this is because the world isn't a positive place.

Even with things like science, religion giving to charity you could easily counter these to be a negative thing because in truth, like most things, they have both positive and negative elements.

Saying that the world is a positive place is more about wether your are a optimist or pessimist and how you perceive the same world and which aspects you focus on. I reckon that i could come up with a decent counter argument to most of the positives and make a few good negative arguments.

But that isn't what you want.

Your best bet is probably to go for the old corny love emotions etc ... isn't it amazing that we are here at all , that we feel, smell... fall in love , appreciate the beauty in nature and in what other humans can create, that we are capable of reasoned thought that we have language and can inter exchange ideas with one another .... that type o thing. Basically the positive is ... at least your alive. but even that has a counter arguement :P
