Jimmy Page, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Trey Anastasio being my favourites.

Clapton, SRV, Hendrix, Page, Slash, Jerry Garcia being the most unique and/or skilled in my opinion.

Everyone previously mentioned + Tom Morello, although I'm not an audioslave fan
The song doesn't make your hands clap,
The hand claps make the song

Morello's talent goes to waste in Audioslave.

Also, add Michael Romeo and Steve Vai to my previous list.

Oh shit I missed 2 crucial motherfuckers on my list.

Greg Allman and Dickie Betts (they're also probably the best guitar duo). Up there with Eric Clapton/Greg Allman.

                              thread-in-thread: Best guitar solos??

I'll give one from each artist I mentioned above:

Stairway to heaven - Jimmy Page
Eruption - Eddie Van Halen(it's played totally fucked up on the album and it STILL sounds great)
                              Comfortably Numb - David Gilmour
                              November Rain - Slash
                              Randy Rhoads - Crazy Train
All Along The Watchtower or Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix
Sultans of Swing - Mark Knopfler
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Kurt Cobain

edit: Pride and Joy by Stevie Ray Vaughan is fan-fucking-tastic.

Dimebag laid down some sick solos. Check out Domination, Cemetery Gates, I'm Broken and Fucking Hostile. They speak for themselves.

As for Satriani, his music is basically a bunch of insane solos with a few semi-basic riffs thrown in so as not to just turn his songs into six-minute finger-breakers. My personal favorite Satch solos are from Surfing with the Alien, Crushing Day, Crystal Planet and Devil's Slide.
