The worst-case scenario for a full-scale invasion of the Japanese home islands was forty-six thousand American lives lost. The ridiculously inflated figure of a half-million for the potential death toll – nearly twice the total of U.S. dead in all theaters in the Second World War – is now routinely repeated in high-school and college textbooks and bandied about by ignorant commentators.

theif everyone commits atrocities and your so used to it that its normal, grey, and balanced. double think is constantly used too.
I'm resigned to it.
I in no way think it is normal, but neither do I think that it generalises an entire culture into being evil. Yes, a lot of that post was sarcasm.
As for balance...
An evil act can lead to a greater good, just like the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I am Japanese and I think both bombs were necessary and appropriate. Anyone who believes otherwise is truly ignorant of other cultures. Moral absolutism is a blindness that will do more harm than good in every case.
In 1946, 88% of American agreed with dropping those bombs. 79% of Euro agreed with it. 82% of British agreed.
How easy it is to look back now and be critical. Maybe if those being critical were alive back then they would remember the context of the times, remember the expansionism of German and Japan and how it threatened the world. Remember how the leader of Japan had commited war crimes that made Hitler look like a good guy. Remember how the leader of Japan had decided that the Americans public and military didn't have the guts to deal with a preemptive massive attack on it's own soil. Remember how Japan was given a chance after the first bomb to prevent any more warfare, yet they flipped off the USA, still thinking that USA didnt have the backbone to do it.
