Don't read too much into that. A 9 goal massacre of Atlanta was the only reason the Leafs are up there in goals for. That game alone catapulted them up the powerplay percentage rankings too, but when it's this early in the season, teams will go up and down the ranks on a day to day basis.

Not really. What Cherry said was misleading. He said that once you get to a score like 6-1, you shouldn't run up the score or else teams will start gooning it up. The problem was that the violence didn't escalate until after the score was already 6-1. The three goals after that weren't exactly an example of piling on goals; they came on the powerplays that ensued after the cheapshots. What were they supposed to do, just pass the puck around in the offensive zone for the last 10 minutes of the game? If anything, the cheapshots weren't retaliation for piling on the goals; the goals were a retaliation for all of the penalties. If Atlanta didn't start head-hunting, the game would probably have ended at 6-1. Cherry also ranted about how the Leafs should have sat their top players so they wouldn't run up the score, but they did. Lindros sat most of the third because Quinn thought he was a target, and two of the last three goals were scored by Steen and Ponikarovsky.

I myself is a good ol' leafs fan, and i'll admit that the sens is a great hockey team this year, and have been for the last couple of years. They've been able to keep their core for so many years, even like, their first draft pick chris phillips, and they're all still here, except for Hossa, Bonk, Yashin and Daigle (haha, I felt so bad for him...the crappy first few years, the acting career, but i'm rooting him on, he scored 20 goals last season in the cruddy defensive system the wild had )

But every single year ottawa has gotten better and better, by keeping their core together and fixing their problems they had the previous year. I remember the first year when they got brutally roughed up in the playoffs, and they picked up Zdeno Chara. Anyways, its only a matter of time they eventually beat the leafs, lol, but now we're considered the underdog =)
