Dont get too hung up on uni ratings. They're arbitary, and dont show the true quality of the uni/teaching/course.
The uni you go to wont stop you getting jobs (except maybe if youre trying to get in somewhere quite cliquey, like my profession, for example). The grade will, as it shows your dedication to the cause (many people cruise to a lower class of degree, and suffer subsequently).
So get the grades, and youll be fine.
Imho, another important point is your interview skills. Your CV gets you shortlisted, but how you present yourself clinches the deal.Well, very simply, it's a biscuit, but it is also a cake - think of it as the transvestite of biscuits. They're about the size of, well, a biscuit, and they're basically a disc of sponge, with a bit of orange-flavour jelly on top, covered in a thin layer of chocolate.

I will try and clarify what I said, by explaining my position. Im looking for a career in finance. Basically the way they select candidates for interview is just to look at the quality of the degree. First they will look at the the grade (basically they throw out anyone below a 2.1) then they look at where the degree came from. This is where the ranking of your uni counts.
I think that this is mainly the case for finance becasue it is a very competitive sector, and they are looking for the 'very best' (hopefully I can con them to take me too ) so you have to give yourself a head-start as possible. Most other jobs arent as competitive and proboably barely even glance at which uni you came from. As I said it all depends on your own personal situation...

Rankings in the UK don't really matter that much in my experience (i've done my grad & postgrad degree in the uk) unless you're in a uni that is widely aknowledged to by in the top 5 or so in your field. The big issue with grades is getting a 1st. Too many unis seem to give 2i's for even average student so they're great, but don't really make you stand out from the pack.
The single most important factor is the demonstrable links & experience you get during your stay at uni. What this should be depends on what industry you want to get into.
A mate of mine was a Sony student rep and got a PR job quite quickly. Another started up one of Manchester's most succesful student nights and got into consulting. Basically doing anything that shows you can take initiative, lead and/or have a real interest in the field you are applying for is probably the most important thing.Last edited by Credit Account; 11-08-2005, 02:21 PM.I sleep all night and I work all day..
