Today I had someone say (through a game of semi drunken truth or dare) that the least thing they liked about me was my pride.

I'm thinking... is pride really that bad? I'm trying to not gloat or be arrogant or whatever but what is it really that makes pride bad? What is the proudest thing that you've done that went wrong? Just curious.

Usually if you have TOO MUCH pride, it isn't pride anymore but stubbornness(new word?), which is why people may not like it about you, or even arrogance instead of pride. Being proud of your accomplishments is great, but forcing it down everyone's throats every chance you get is bad.

And I can't really think of something that I did that I was proud of that got me in trouble, sorry

But, my pride lies in my art, even though sometimes I think it's sub par, but 'm always told it's great work, which I know it is but 've become one of those bashful/modest artists.

I'm not saying this is hte case with you Bio, but some people that gloat too much about their abilities or feel the need to constantly reinforce positive things about their own image verbally around other people (constantly saying "I'm awesome, etc") shows insecurity. It's along the same lines of people who put down others to make themselves feel better.

I don't think confidence is a bad thing, but I don't know, pride just seems to have a negative connotation to me. As long as it's kept in moderation, I believe pride is an ok thing to have.

i dont know, pride isnt that bad but it depends how you go about having it. i know people that are clearly proud of themselves but dont brag about specifics, theyre just confident. in that context, pride is fine.

however, from reading your posts on these forums i can imagine you bragging about your job and your grades and your schoolwork, and i know people that brag like that rub me the wrong way big time. if you dont brag about shit, maybe that person is just an insecure loser that doesnt like that you have confidence.

If you define pride as inordinate self-esteem, then pride is bad. If you define it as a justifiable self-respect, then it's good.

It just depends on how your friend was defining pride. I think Nick has a point though...it sounds like your friend perceives you displaying cockiness or arrogance---not self-confidence.

Pride is bad when someone uses it as their main strategy to reinforce self-esteem. Sometimes people are clearly wrong, yet they stand by the same disproven hypothesis because they feel they will look stupid, or are not smart if they concede they were wrong about it. Basically, this is when pride overrides logical thinking and it becomes stubbornness. The irony is it makes you look even more foolish than being wrong about the initial hypothesis.
