I thought 1k meant 1 thousand degrees. Kelvin was some dude from my high school.

Most prefixes which make a unit bigger are written in capital letters (M G T etc.), but when they make a unit smaller then lower case (m n p etc.) is used. Exceptions to this are the kilo [k] to avoid any possible confusion with kelvin [K]

i do understand the confusion though, unless you did physics you don't use K really at all.

Lord Kelvin whom the unit is named after was born in Belfast, Ireland and his name was William Thomson he was later knighted and became Baron Kelvin or something. I know this becuase i'm from the same city and when my physics teacher introduces us to his temperature scale he told us, a fact that would only really intrest those from the same city going , "ooo i was born here too."

and i thought j=t was being more humorous than serious. honestly, though, online people rarely try to use capitals where they matter. and at least where i'm from, 1K is the same as saying one grand, or a thousand (dollars). then again, we're the idiots who decided not to use the metric system, so Kelvin and Centigrade are only mentioned in physics, rather than taught (in lower grades, at least).
