  • European Football Fans

Europe and South America are two really interesting places when it comes to Football. Almost every city and town has a football team or more which are supported by the local populace. There are various types of Supporters however the most common types are Ultras and Casuals. Ultras supporter only follows his/her local team. These are parts of the Ultras code I was able to gather from some Italian Ultras forums.

    - To protect the pride of his/her city
    - To outcheer the visiting fans
    - To fight and win in a battle against the opposing teams fans
    - To protect his/her's teams scarf and all other flags that are brought to the game

Casual supporters are the same as Ultras except they are not known for wearing football merchandise. They wear clothing such as adidas, burberry and stone island.
Two great movies regarding the casual scene are The Football Factory and Green Street Hooligans.

I myself was a part of Belgrade (Serbia and Montenegro) supporter group until moving to Canada. Back when I was there though it was all about scarfs and team colors, although club merchandise is still dominant alot of supporters there are impressed by the Casual scene found in the UK. Ultras movement is slowly deteriorating and burberry, adidas and stone island are becoming the dominant brands to wear.

I gathered some pictures I thought were good. If anyone has anything to add be my guest. I know alot of the players that play this game are from Europe and see this kind of stuff every weekend.

i think that these ppl are the minority of most football fans and most are more intent on watching the game than getting into fights. There are alot of hooligans but i don't consider them true football fans when they care so little for the team that they know there actions can get there teams fined/disqualified and banned but continue to riot etc...

the type of "supporters" you described could also be called Hooligans, tho the Ultra's will be more of supporters and mainly do the fighting if you insult the club and the casuals really just go for the fighting. And granted, I think most Ultra's are real fans. But still.

What I like most is, when you got to say Ajax - Feyenoord wich is a HUGE match in the Netherlands no matter how crappy one of the teams is performing at that moment, is the ambiance, you have a Huge Ajax flag going over the crow on one side, you have people holding up colored papers to make up the Ajax Logo, stuff like that, it's just very impressive when you are in a stadium and that happens, you really understand why the audience is often called the 12th man on the field.

I like the way you always talk about that shitty club called Ajax. I'm not going to look it up, but wasn't it 2 years ago that you said Ajax was better than Ac Milan? God that made me laugh so badly! Haha! What i like most is that all Ajax fans turn silent once their doing shitty. I haven't heard you talk about them for a while. Their "12th men" are football-nitwits who only chear in happy times.

You say we only cheer when we are doing good.. you mean that you cheer when your team loses? Wow you're a real fan.

History has proven that Ajax is the best Dutch team, and 2 less years aren't gonna change that. I don't recall me ever saying Ajax is better then AC Milan, but Ajax can sure as hell beat AC Milan, and if you are reffering too of what I think you are reffering too, wich would be either one of the 2 matches we played against AC Milan in 2003. Then I could have said that Ajax was better then AC Milan in ONE of those matches but that AC Milan won in the very last seconds of the game by an error of the referee. Yea then I might have said that Ajax was better then AC Milan THAT game.

You're PSV right? just because PSV manages to do semi-good 2 years in a row doesn't give you any right to claim that PSV is better then Ajax. If Ajax is soo shitty, why did PSV lose THIS Season to Ajax? I support my team you support yours, that's called freedom of choice. And everyone has a different taste, whether it comes to sports, music, food, whatever. Just because the team you chose to Support doesn't have a history as great as Ajax doesn't mean you get the right to bash them.

And I am an Ajax fan, I don't care what you think about it, and I will always stand behind Ajax wether we are doing shitty or not.

I think it is wrong to acuse the casuals of just wanting to start fights. They simply live for the team they support. Besides, what else you gonna do on a saturday night ^-^
If you take out Ultras, Casuals and other supporters out of football, you automatically Americanize the sport. There would be no more away games and football becomes an American sport where families eat hot dogs and applaud both teams regardless of who wins.

An American sport? Hmmm...I invite you to an Eagles game next year here in Philadelphia. This town lives for it's sports teams! Applaud both teams...um...NO. Show up here in Philly for a game withe the Eagles vs. whomever and wear the oppsoing teams jersey...see if you come out of the game walking or if not just covered in all the trash the fans will throw at you. If anything...the pre-game tailgate's that I have attended have had menu's of Lobster, Filet Mignon, Hamburgers, Shrimp, Ribs...can go on and on...ppl take the time weekly to have a menu of what there group of friends will be dining on pre-game in the parking lots. Beer unfortunately must be kept in plastic cups or the cops bust ya for having alchohol.

Come to Philadelphia as my guest to an Eagles game next year and take on the actual fanatic partying and team spirit that embodies the fans to the team.

I would compare it to what I experienced on Rugby Day in Twickenham, where I enjoyed the ppl and love for the sport at the Admiral Nelson Pub prior to going to the match. Was a great time and the people where just as great. Real fans are real fans! Philadelphia...regardless of win or loss are mostly a city of fans that are all hard core! I dare you to parade Sanata Clause on our playing field on a snowy day!

Americanize it pfft...cut me a break
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.
