Well, 4 pages but this has gotten silly. I'm rather impressed though.

Oh Telc@t, come over one day, I'll show you some really nice Anime, in return you can tell me all about Goddess's ticklish spots.

Oh, for the record, traditionally, western styled cartoon males have incredible musculature. Whilst in Anime males are more gracefully represented, trading speed and agility for strength.

We can see an interesting parrel in our cultures sports. The fighting styles used that is. Boxing verus karate etc.

Suma wrestling the art of defeating your enemy without grabbing his clothing. Idealistically at least it works. Of course my statement is not with exceptions, so stop trying to one up me on symantics just because yer stupid.

The turtles were drawn with mucles, go take a look at them. Which is of course what this is all about.

And the rat is smart, cheap, good for dinner, but smart, how else can he get to the top in a city where he has millions of competitors? Oh yeah, he cheated!

This is a pointless arguement. On one hand some people are differentiating between cartoon and anime. On the other, there are people who are saying that just like "run spot run" is a movie, so is "lost highway". And so anime = cartoon.

What it gets down to is definition.

I do believe that the first cartoons were infact comic strips. That's why the dictionary.com definition of cartoon is that it's an animated cartoon (although a better dictionary would not use the word IN the definition).

So it comes down to this. There is no clearcut way to define all of this because everyone has a different interpretation. I think a BETTER way would be to seperate it all out and then reclassify it all:


Big overreaching thing: Animation

Subcategories within "Animation": Computer generated, Cartoon, Anime.

Computer generated = some are movies, some are for kids (i.e. toy story, reboot, transformers: The beast wars). Some are mixed with traditional hand-drawn animation.

(Animated) Cartoon = Usually used as reference to WESTERN animation, and does encompass a wide amount of material. Adult Cartoons would be something like the movie "Heavy Metal" or the TV show "Aeon Flux" or "Bob & Margaret". There are all-ages cartoons like "The Simpsons", "The Family Guy". Overwhemingly though, the word cartoon generates visions of shows and movies directly aimed at kids.

Anime - Refers to what Western people call Japanese Animation (at one point in time it was called JapAnimation). Just like cartoons, Anime covers a large amount of material. Some are for kids (Pokemon). Some are ONLY for Adults (Hentai), and some are for a larger segment of the population. Unfortunately many Western people view Anime as purely Hentai or animation porn, which it is not. Such a narrow minded view would be akin to thinking that the word "movie" automatically and only means "porno movie" which is obviously wrong.

Just like how the word cartoon usually conjures up images of children's shows (although this is obvoiusly not true), anime usually conjures up images of a certain class of Japanese Animation for those in the know. This includes most of the anime which has been discussed in this thread (except for the Hentai). The quality of the animation, the style of the drawing and the types of stories which are told in this class of Anime are very different than what is seen in the West.

In fact what is basically mainstream anime is directed at all ages (although usually young males teenagers - 30 year olds). The culture of anime usually dictates that nudity will be around (although for TV shows, the showing of pubic hair and nipples is against the law in Japan), and characters will have big eyes and act and do certain things. Akin to saying that action movies usually involve someone getting killed, the description that I have listed for mainstream anime in no way determines what the plot will be or what kind of show it is.

Not all Anime follow all of these stereotypes. Suffice to say, Anime refers to Japanese Animation, and for most people means a certain type of show which is very different from western shows, and aimed for older audiences. Cartoon refers to western animation and has connentations of only referring to children's shows.

Heh I guess so. This really sucks right now. I want to watch something else, but I'm still thinking of Eva (I just finished the game Eva: Girlfriend of Steel LOL and I didn't really know what was going on cause it was in Japanese). I know that anything I watch will be ruined for some time because I won't be able to really get into it

That game was such a pain in the ass. For the longest time people thought it had clues to some of the answers in NGE. It took us at least a year of yelling and shouting to get everyone to listen.

I've made it a rule not to play any video game based on a movie/tv show, etc, and for good reason. However, in the case of a Matrix game, I might at least try it.
